"Cool" is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.

"Cool" can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, "It's cool. " You may think, "He's so cool" when you see your favorite footballer. We all maximize (扩大) the meaning of "cool". You can use it instead of many words such as "new" or "surprising". Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence. "It's so cool". Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

But the story also shows a scarcity (缺乏) of words. Without "cool", some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word "cool"? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

Have you heard about paper-cutting? Paper-cutting is an important art form in China. Paper-cuts were used for many purposes, and everything can become the theme of paper-cuts, from people to the things that can be found in everyday life such as birds, flowers and animals. Each paper-cut brings out the personal ideas of the author. People express traditional culture or their own feelings with different styles of paper-cuts. For example, when someone marries, we put up some red paper-cuts on the wall, dressing table or other furniture to express our best wishes.

It is easy to learn paper-cutting but very difficult to make it perfect. We need a long-time practice to learn how to use the scissors and how to paint. Moreover, we need to learn some cutting skills.

At present, in many parts of China, paper-cutting skills have become a must for women and a symbol of a clever mind.

    1. (1) Not everything can become the theme of paper-cuts.
    2. (2) People express traditional culture or their own feelings with the same paper-cut.
    3. (3) It is not easy to make a perfect paper-cut.
    4. (4) When we learn paper-cutting, we don't need to learn cutting skills.
    5. (5) Women must learn paper-cutting skills in many places of China.
  • 24.  根据短文内容,将下面方框的句子回填空白处。每个选项只能用一次。

Facial recognition (人脸识别) technology is widely used today. For example, the police use it to search for bad people. Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection (探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising (广告). One facial detection system can judge (判断) a person's "happiness" or "fear" level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing glasses. Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people's ages and five levels of feelings-from "very happy" to "very unhappy". Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers' experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices. Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy (隐私) group, is one of them. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person's age and feelings. And the advertising (广告) maker said it didn't keep any personal information or record any videos. It sounds that they are contradictions (矛盾).

    A. It's also used to unlock phones or doors.

    B. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair.

    C. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.

    D. Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores.

    E. However, they explained they wouldn't store people's information.
