  • 39.  Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

A small , white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.

It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas-oh, not the true meaning of Christmas. Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts-running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…, spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.

Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤) at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.

As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class. Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won, " he said. "They have a lot potential (潜力) , but losing like this could take the heart out of them. " Justin loved kids-all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That' s when the

idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.

On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.

    1. (1) How did Justin feel about the team' s failure?
      A . Upset B . Angry C . Hopeless D . Shameful
    2. (2) Why did the writer send gifts to the inner-city church without leaving her name?
A . To avoid being thanked B . To play a joke on Justin C . To give Justin a surprise D . To protect her private information
    3. (3) Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
      A . The Church Gift B . A Special Note C . The White Envelop D . A Christmas Card
  • 40.  B. Choose the word or experience and complete the passage (选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)

"I can't believe what I' m hearing!" I thought to myself. Jeff was the last candidate (候选人) for president of Student Council. My best friend Tony came to me and said, "I' m sorry, Mike, I really thought you should be 1 . "

Later that day, I happened to pass Jeff in the dining room. I offered him a 2  "congratulations" and walked to my usual table. To my surprise, Jeff put his plate beside mine.

"I'm, er—I' m just wandering if you would … consider coming to work on my team, " he said 3 . "You are really smart, and you would he a great manager. "

    "I don't think so, " I replied, feeling unsure.

"Well, if you change your mind, we are meeting tomorrow, " he said before moving to another table.

All that right, I thought about the offer from Jeff. Maybe being a part of the election process ( 选举过程) would give  me a chance to make important changes at our school. I decided to join them.

My first goal was to 4 a catchy advertisement. Within a few days, we designed a poster with Jeff's pictures showing him in a number of activities. No one could walk through any hallway without passing Jeff's smiling face.

My next step was to 5  which new activities students would like to have at our school. Many of them wanted a chess club and a volleyball team.

With tie information I had collected, Jeff met with the headmaster. The headmaster  agreed to add these activities to our school program.

An eighth grader said, "It' ll be like attending a new school with Jeff as president. "

Hearing these words made my heart filled with 6 . I had wanted to become president of Student Council to make a difference. I achieved that and more by working as a member of Jeff's team. He became the most popular candidate and I was a large part of his success. The fact that it has made a difference in other people's lives is the real prize. What a great feeling!

Scientists guess that 80% of a person' s weight gain comes from genetics and 20% comes from the person' s environment. By 1998, more than 130 genes and gene neighbors were found to have some link to weight gain or weight loss in people. These different genes can e work all together or work in groups. This means that different people may b up or lose weight with difficulty for different reasons.

One example of these different kinds of combinations is a family of genes that allows people to change extra fat into heat instead of s the fat in the body. Animals which have this same family of genes do not gain weight easily as other animals. Other genes may affect how quickly the s lets the brain know that it is full. If these genes slow down the passage of this information, people may eat more than they really need. Genes are also thought to be linked with a person' s fidgets in a day. Fidgeting is small movements of a person' s hands, feet, arms or legs usually when the person is n or excited. Fidgeting actually uses a lot of energy over a day and his energy usually comes from burning fat.

In one experiment about weight gain, researchers wanted to see how much energy different people used when they were resting. People in the experiment were asked to lie on a bed and not move for 40 minutes. Researchers then measured the energy the person used for breathing. They found that different people in the study used very different a    of energy for this one job, breathing. Researchers calculated that some people in the study burned 1, 067 calories per day w  others burned up to 3, 015 calories. Those people who burn fewer calories doing normal work or exercise have a slow metabolism (新陈代谢).

  • 42.  D. Answer the question (根据短文内容回答下列问题) (12分)

While carrying your schoolbag on the way to school or home, does the heavy weight of your books make you less interested to learn knowledge? Don' t worry. E-readers may help you say goodbye to your heavy schoolbag.

An e-reader has the memory space to hold hundreds of books. So people want to replace heavy schoolbags with small, light e-readers. For example, Cushing Academy, a high school in Massachusetts, US, got rid of most of the 20, 000 books in its library last summer. The head of the library said that the school was going to replace printed books with e-books. Teachers and students will use e-readers instead.

Most e-readers are thin and weigh less than 500g. They can download an e-book in 60 seconds. "It' s so convenient. You can have so many books right at your fingertips!" said Meghan Chenausky, 16.

Chinese schoolchildren are also trying e-readers. At the 2010 Shanghai Expo, an e-schoolbag was on show. It is a special e-reader that students can use to download textbooks from the school servers. It can also send and receive homework.

Some schools in Beijing and Shanghai have tried this e-schoolbag for a few years. "It' s excellent. I don' t have to carry a heavy schoolbag anymore, " said Xiao Qi, 15, Beijing. "And it' s eco-friendly because it saves paper. "

New generation e-readers have many functions(功能) besides reading, such as Wi-Fi and multimedia. However, some parents worry that these functions may have a bad influence on their children' s study habits. "I think Wi-Fi is not necessary for kids, " says Zeng Wenwen, 43, Beijing.

    6. (6) What does the writer mainly want to tell us? What do you think of e-readers? (此题2分)
