As soon as I got home from school,Aunt Beth noticed the silver medal hanging from the left pocket of my uniform.She1 her hair in front of the mirror in our room when I walked in and put my school bag down on my bed.
"What's that hanging on your dress?"
"It's2 that Mother Agnes gave me in front of the whole class this afternoon."
My aunt looked)3 ."So soon? You started school only one week ago. What is it4 ?"
"It's because I topped my class this week.Mother Agnes said I could wear it for seven days. Here, this certificate(证书)goes with it."I opened my schoolbag and handed her the certificate.
"Why,it's all5 in French or English or some other foreign languages. How do you expect me6 this?" I knew she was glad because she was smiling as she hugged me. "One day soon," she went on, "you'll be able to translate all this into Chinese for me.7 then,we'll just write today's date on the certificate and8 .Go and close the door so no one will come in."
I watched her go to the bookcase and take out9 wooden box.She took the key, opened the box and placed my certificate under her diamond watch. In her eyes,my certificate was10 the watch.

Borneo has a lot of2 with large areas of rain forest. The highest peak in Borneo,Mount Kinabalu,is about 4,100 meters. With a generally hot,wet climate, rain is more common than not.Borneo3 between 150 and 200 inches of rainfall every year.
Borneo is really a4 house of life on Earth.Borneo has about 11,000 kinds of flowering plants, about a third of which are indigenous(土生土长的).Rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world. It has no leaves and hardly any stem(茎),just a huge flower. The flower can have a diameter(直径)of up to 106 cm and it can5 to 10 ke Rut it has a smell lilo rotting(腐烂的) meat.
The island of Borneo is home to many endangered animals.More wildlife is discovered by the scientists6 live in the many national parks on the island.Orangutans(红毛猩猩) are found only in the rain forests of the Southeast Asia islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They spend7 their whole lives in the tree﹣﹣ swinging in tree tops and building nests for sleep. The name orangutan8 "man of the forest" in the Malay language.
Borneo has become a very9 holiday destination in recent years.More and more people go to Borneo to spend their holidays.They10 adventure holidays, jungle trekking holidays, beach holidays, bird watching and diving.

A man was walking through an elephant camp and found that the elephants weren't being kept in cages or held by chains (铁链).All that was holding them back from escaping the camp was a small piece of rope – it was just tied to one of their legs.
As the man looked at the elephants,he couldn't understand it.Why didn't the elephants just use their strength to break the rope and escape the camp? They could have easily done so,but instead, they didn't try at all.He really wanted to know to why it was so,then he asked a trainer nearby.
"When they were very young and much smaller,we used the same size of rope to tie them, and at that age,it was enough to hold them.As they grew up,they still believed that they couldn't break away. They believed the rope could still hold them,so they never tried to break free," the trainer answered.
The man was speechless. These animals could have broken free whenever they wanted, but it was just because over time, they had the belief that it just wasn't possible.
How many of us go through life like the elephants – holding onto the belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at it once or sometimes before?
Failure is part of learning. If we failed once or a few times,it doesn't mean we can never succeed. We should never give up trying when we experience failures in life.
If you hit your head against a tree all day long, you probably wouldn't feel too great and neither would your brain.Woodpeckers do this all the time.
Some animals are human's best friends. The woodpecker is one of them. The bird helps trees to grow by eating worms inside the tree trunk. They find worms by hitting the tree trunk. They hit their heads into trees with a force of 15 mph (24 km/h),20 times a second! So why don't they get headaches?
The answer is in their brains.
The texture(质地)of a woodpecker's brain is different from a human's.Our brain is filled with cerebral spinal fluid(脑脊液).When we hurt our head, our brain moves around in the fluid. But woodpeckers have none of this fluid. This means that when they hit the tree, their brain is less likely to move around.
Besides, thick muscles and sponge﹣like bones(海绵状骨头) also help to protect the bird's brain. They keep the brain from moving around when the bird is working on a tree trunk.
The fast and strong hitting may also harm the woodpeckers' eyes.Don't worry. The birds have a special trick. They close their thick inner eyelids(眼睑)when hitting the tree. The eyelid acts like a seat belt and keeps the eye from getting out of the head,or the speed would tear the eye.
Scientists even think some of the things they found out about woodpeckers can be used to make better helmets(头盔).

②the cerebral spinal fluid

Be careful when throwing away wet waste, which may include leftovers and vegetable peel.
Shi Yuan,14,from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School, has made a special bag to help solve this problem.Shi came up with the idea after he once got wet waste all over his pants while throwing it away. That was why he invented the special bag with the help of family members and his Science teacher.
When the upper end of the tape is open, the bag can be turned upside﹣down.By holding the tape users can easily throw wet waste into a trash bin without getting their hands dirty.
To invent this is not easy.At first, the tape Shi used was a one﹣off product. So he kept on improving the design.A few months later, the boy got the idea of using weak glue, which allows the waste bag to be reused. He got the idea from Post﹣it notes (便利贴).
Shi's bag has become popular both in local communities and on the Internet. But Shi doesn't think he has done a great thing, "I just enjoy the fun process."
A.He has sold 2 million bags online.
B.It wasn't environmentally friendly.
C.The bag will be widely used in the market.
D.The special plastic bag has a band of adhesive tape.
E.Not only old grandmas but also young mothers like his bags.
F.He found that many other people were facing the same problem.
G.Maybe these kinds of waste have made a big mess when you throw them away.

When my daughterin primary school, she brought home four small twigs (嫩枝) from school to plant.None of them looked very strong, but with hope for the future,I planted themin our backyard that had enough sunlight.Over the years, because of the poor soil, three of them died.Only one survived.
It grew very.It hooked more like a fat bush than a tree.Later,I noticed thatwas starting to die.The lower branches(树枝)were becoming bare.Only the top third of the tree was still, green.I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer(肥料),but it didn't.
Later one morning,I went out and looked at it again.I was wondering whether it would be better to just cut it down.It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take alook at it,however,I noticed somethingwithin the leaves. It was a robin (知更鸟)patiently building a nest in the topmost branches.I smiled when I heard thesong.I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.
This tree reminded me that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly.Until our last,we have things to do,love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.
