Should Students Wear Uniforms? Some schools have a rule saying that students must wear uniforms to class. Now, uniforms have become more common in public schools. Many schools say uniforms catch students' attention in class. But some students think uniforms are uncomfortable. Should students wear uniforms?

Our magazine asked readers to weigh. They have different ideas and here, two of them share their ideas on it.

    • YES!

    Yuna Chong, 9,California

Uniforms are as much about safety as they are about a sense of group. Teachers don't have to worry about losing sight of students at the playground or on a field trip. Also, when kids wear uniforms, they feel like they are part of the same group. I wear a uniform and feel like my school is one big team. I feel included.

Also, when everyone wears the same, you don't have to worry about how you look. Parents can save money as well! And in the morning, I can save time because I don't have to think too much about my clothing.

    • No!

    Sterling Heights, 12,Michigan

I don't think kids should have to wear uniforms. If students are wearing the same thing, they can't show themselves. Kids should feel like they can be their own person. They shouldn't have to match. During school hours, we should also be comfortable.

If we feel uncomfortable in our uniforms, we can't learn very well. For many, it can't be more uncomfortable to be in a uniform all day. Next, parents have to go shopping and spend a lot of money on the uniforms that we never wear at home.

What is your idea about it?Do you wear uniforms when you go to school every day?Write to our students' magazine and voice your idea!

    1. (1) How do kids feel like when they wear school uniforms in Yuna's opinion?
A . They have a sense of group. B . They are out of teachers' sight. C . Their school isn't a big team. D . They are part of different groups.
    2. (2) Sterling thinks students don't like school uniforms because ____.
A . they don't learn at all B . they try to match with others C . they don't want to waste time D . they don't wear uniforms at home
    3. (3) Who is the passage written for?
      A . The teachers. B . The students. C . The parents. D . The visitors.

In the western world, Chinese takeout (外卖) is popular. It is usually sent to your house in small square boxes, with rice and fortune cookies (幸运饼干). It is a good choice if you feel lazy and don't want to cook or eat out.

But this kind of Chinese food isn't very authentic (正宗的). In fact, it is very different from real Chinese food. Now over the years, real Chinese dishes have become more popular in foreign countries as well. Chinese people who live abroad introduced most of these foods.

In the United States, people enjoy eating jianbing and roujiamo. In Russia, tanghulu has become a popular winter snack. Latiao is even popular in overseas (海外的) classrooms. A lot of these foods are like Western foods. This might be why they are appealing to foreigners.

For example, roujiamo looks like a hamburger. Youtiao is kind of like churro (西班牙油条), a snack that is popular in Spain. And tanghulu is similar to candy apples, which are beloved by children in the US and UK.

But what do foreigners really think about all of these authentic Chinese foods? To find out, you can invite some of your friends to have a try of these foods.

    1. (1) You will find ____ in the Chinese takeout if you are in a Western country.
      A . a square box B . some candies C . hamburgers D . rice and fortune cookies
    2. (2) According to the passage, when you ____, you may order a Chinese takeout.
A . have a family meeting B . have fun with lots of friends C . feel lazy and don't want to cook or eat out D . want to enjoy the real Chinese food
    3. (3) ____ is also popular in overseas classrooms.
      A . Latiao B . Tanghulu C . Jianbing D . Roujiamo
    4. (4) The reason why people in the Western world like these Chinese food might be ____.
A . these foods look very nice B . these foods smell good C . these foods are very cheap D . these foods are like Western foods

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the different parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Empire Qin Shi Huang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried(埋葬) under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man".

Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk(垃圾) has become a problem in outer space too.

According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.

Objects, like bits of old space rockets (火箭) or satellites (卫星), move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spaceship, it could damage (损害) the vehicle.

To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U. S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2, 000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.

To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere(大气层) after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.

Many scientists also suggest different ways to clean up space junk. In England, scientists are testing a special net (网) that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely dealt with.

"The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers, " says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher.

"The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become, " he says.

    1. (1) The underlined word "these" in Paragraph 2 refers to ____.
      A . telescopes B . problems C . pieces of space junk D . BBC news reports
    2. (2) The space junk is considered a problem because ____.
A . it burns up after it re-enters the atmosphere B . it often stops the view of telescopes on Earth C . it could force new space tools to travel at lower speeds D . it may crash into other space tools, causing damage or death
    3. (3) What can we learn about junk in outer space?
A . Tiny pieces of junk at lower speeds do little harm to the earth. B . Space junk may be a bigger problem if no action is taken. C . Scientists from England and Germany have better ways to reduce space junk. D . There's no way of cleaning up space junk because more objects are sent into space.
    4. (4) We can infer from the passage that ____.
A . a safe space tool can stay in space for ever B . rubbish as well as space junk used to be a big problem C . scientists have no trouble solving the problem of space junk D . more efforts require to be made to keep outer space safe and clean
