The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the great works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.

In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring work. What's in your mind when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain (抱怨)? I think most people have.

Tom Sawyer, however, thought "differently" when he was asked to do something boring. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint fence ( 篱 笆 ). Tom's friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Tom told Ben that he felt "excited" about the work. "Only one in a thousand — maybe even two thousand — boys can do this!" Tom said.

Tom's words made Ben interested in the work. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.

This story teaches me an important lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given boring or tiring work, don't complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is possible that nobody will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you'll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!

    1. (1) Who writes the classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?
      A . Mark Twain. B . Aunt Polly. C . Ben Rogers. D . Tom Sawyer
    2. (2) Why did Tom say the underlined sentence to Ben in Paragraph 3?
A . To show his sadness. B . To catch Ben's interest. C . To show his excitement. D . To show the work is difficult.
    3. (3) Put the following information into correct order according to the passage.

      a. Ben Rogers walked past.

      b. Aunt Polly told Tom to paint fence.

      c. Tom said that he felt "excited" about painting fence.

      d. Ben gave Tom his apple to get the chance to paint the fence.

      A . a-c-b-d B . a-b-c-d C . b-a-c-d D . b-a-d-c
    4. (4) What is Tom Sawyer like according to this passage?
      A . Brave. B . Clever. C . Talented. D . Hardworking.
    5. (5) Which of the following is the writers' opinion?
A . The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is kind of boring. B . He doesn't think he can learn anything from the book. C . All people like complaining when they are given boring or tiring work. D . It is useless to complain when you are given something boring or tiring.

Many people enjoy seeing busy little squirrels running around a park. It might surprise you, then, to learn that some squirrels are in danger. Without protection, you may not see the UK's red squirrels in just ten years.

The main reason is that people brought gray squirrels to the UK in the 1890s.

They are larger and longer. They are also better at competing for food and space than red squirrels. As a result, the country's red squirrels are hard to survive.

Another problem is that gray squirrels have brought with them the squirrel pox virus (松鼠痘病毒). They can carry this virus without any influences (影响) on themselves, but it kills red squirrels. Animals scientists are worried that these problems are having a serious influence.

People in the UK love their red squirrels, so they are doing their best to save them. They came up with a few ideas. One is to stop the gray squirrels from having more babies. With fewer gray squirrels to compete with or spread the virus, the red squirrels will have a better chance. Besides, the trees in the UK will also be healthier, since gray squirrels sometimes hurt trees.

Another idea is to use gray squirrels' natural enemies (敌人) to cut down their numbers. For example, pine martens mainly catch gray squirrels instead of red squirrels. Scientists are putting pine martens in the areas with too many gray squirrels so that different animals can live together better in this way. With these plans, people in the UK hope their red squirrels will make a comeback.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "survive" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A . Continue to live. B . Continue to play. C . Continue to sleep. D . Continue to walk.
    2. (2) What can we know about red squirrels according to the passage?
A . They sometimes hurt trees. B . Pine martens like catching them. C . They are larger and longer than gray squirrels. D . Squirrel pox virus from gray squirrels can kill them.
    3. (3) What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A . Why people in the UK love their red squirrels. B . Why British do their best to save red squirrels. C . How British try their best to save red squirrels. D . How British try their best to save the trees there.
    4. (4) How many ways of saving red squirrels are mentioned in the passage?
      A . One. B . Two. C . Three. D . Four.
    5. (5) What would be the best structure of the passage?
      A . B . C . D .

Not many of us enjoy doing chores. And some of us even hate it a lot! Here are some reasons why children should help out around the house.

They are young now, but they won't be kids forever! Cooking meals and folding clothes are just some of the skills they will need once they finally move out. Since schools don't teach these things, learning them at home seem even more important.

Chores help teach kids about teamwork.  This skill can help them develop better at school or work in the future.

Chores help kids to learn to respect ( 尊 重 ) their parents. Letting only one or two family members do chores is not fair. By doing chores, children may understand and thank their parents for all their hard work.

Chores help older kids build good habits early and be independent. They will know how to plan their things better by themselves. Neither of these will seem difficult if kids take them seriously.

Chores help families get closer. Chores take up time. Sometimes chores will even cheer up their neighbors next to their houses when they help them out! Anyway, don't forget to do chores.

    A. Housework is a waste of their time.

    B. Chores help to teach kids life skills.

    C. Actually, it's useful and necessary for the family.

    D. Chores help kids take a break from schoolwork stress.

    E. Through housework children learn to work with others.

    F. In the future, they'll know how to respect the hard work of others.

    G. But they can leave special memories between children and parents.
