I jumped up high in the air and landed in the sandpit. "3.55 metres!" the referee (裁判) announced. The result was my best by then, but I was not 1 with it.
I have been competing in the long jump since primary school, so for me, I was likely to succeed. But this time, 2 seemed far from me. After trying several times, I lost heart and wanted to 3 .

The earth is 4.6 billion years old. We humans have lived on the earth for only 35,000 years, but during this period, we have changed our planet a lot in many ways. Some things we have done are very good for the earth while others are bad.
The Amazon rainforest in South America, at seven million km², is the largest rainforest in the world. The forest is important for people all over the world because it produces a lot of oxygen, and also helps to cool the weather. But large areas of the rainforest are being cut down for wood—55% of the forest could be gone by 2030! The World Wildlife Federation(WWF) is helping to stop some areas of the rainforest from being cut down.
At 68,000 km², the Aral Sea was one of the largest lakes in the world before the 1960s. Then rivers were diverted and it has been getting smaller ever since. By 2007, it was only 10% of its original size and had divided into three separate lakes. Dust storms happen again and again and the villages sit on the edge of a huge desert with large ships stranded(搁浅) in its sand. A dam has been built to try to bring back higher water levels in the North with some success.
In China, about 3,600 km² of grassland near the Gobi turns into desert every year. There are often storms that blow dust all the way to Beijing. The storms are getting worse each year and have a deep influence on farmers.
The goal of the Green Wall Project, started in 1978, is to increase forests in northern China from 5% to 15% in order to stop the desert from growing. The project faces many challenges. However, people must never give up on it.
Saving the disappearing nature needs everyone's effort. Although each one of us may only do a little, together we can make a big difference. What can you do to protect the environment?

Popsicles
Popsicles were invented by 11-year-old Frank Epperson in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a stick in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. Because of this he couldn't drink it any more, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids at school in summer because they were delicious and helped them stay cool. More than a hundred years passed, and popsicles are still one of the best summer treats!
Earmuffs
When 15-year-old Chester Greenwood was ice-skating in Farmington, Maine, in 1873, his ears were so cold that he couldn't bear it. Although he tried covering his head in a scarf, it was not comfortable. After some thinking, Greenwood made wire into two circles and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. He then connected them with a steel headband and the first earmuffs were invented!
Crayon holders
When 11-year-old Cassidy Goldstein needed crayons for a school project, she had a hard time because there were so many small or broken ones. She found some small clear plastic tubes at home. Although the tiny tubes were usually filled with water to keep flowers fresh, she found that they fit tightly around the crayons. She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented Crayon Holders.
Wristies
While some kids just complain when snow gets in their mittens and their hands get wet, 10-year-old Kathryn Gregory decided to do something about it. She created the first pair of Wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists warm and dry. Wristies are long gloves with no fingers and they are worn under your mittens and coat. They can also be worn alone. They help you when you work in the cold because your hands stay warm while you use your fingers. She also started a business, with her parents' help, which she still runs today.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition, Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another, that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.
Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try,"What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on they are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
Technology has done our world wonders: from development in medicine to our daily lives. It has undoubtedly changed the way our society works, and how we communicate with one another and ourselves. However, by welcoming technology as part of life, are we losing our ability to create?
Technology provides a new chance for creativity to exist. Through technology, ideas can be set free and come to life. We have the necessary tools for greater possibilities and new solutions. For example, businesses now have the chance to improve themselves more creatively through websites, film advertisements, social media or radio.
However, when we look more closely, it's easy to notice some disadvantages. For example, many of us depend so much on automated calculations(计算器) rather than taking the time to work it out for ourselves. Another situation is that a lot of people are spending too much time on screens. As a result, they are reducing the chances to come up with their own creations.
Is there a way to find a balance between technology and human creativity? I think so. It is simply a matter of making sure that creativity is not deterred by technology. The first way is to reduce our use of electronic products by setting limits on when, where, and how long we use them, turning off the notice on your phone. Once you become used to these, you will feel surprised how little you think about your phone.
Another wonderful way is to take daily walks in nature. It can help you refresh and keep going. In the long run, a daily walk can not only influence our creativity and imagination but further our physical and mental health. We can also develop our creativity by doing yoga, keeping a diary, or reading.
The actions you choose to take will help change the relationship between creativity and technology for the better. With the right balance, technology can be a good method of improving creativity.

This spring, our teacher encouraged us to plant some trees around our school. Everyone thought it was a great idea, so we started looking online for the best trees to buy. If we wanted them to grow in a proper way, they had to be the right kind—but there were so many different ones to choose! So our teacher suggested that we should look for trees that grew naturally in our part of the world. They'd also be more suitable for the wildlife here.
We learnt that trees were happiest where they had room to grow, with plenty of space for their branches. The trees might get damaged close to the school playgrounds, for example. So we tried to avoid areas where students were very active. Finally, we found a quiet comer close to the school garden — perfect!
Once we had planted the trees, we knew we had to look after them carefully. We all took turns to check the leaves regularly and make sure they had no strange spots or marks on them. And we decided to check the following spring in case the leaves turned yellow too soon, as that could also mean the trees were sick.
We all knew that we wouldn't be at the school anymore by the time the trees grew tall, and bit sad. But we'd planted the trees to benefit not only the environment, but also future students at the school. And that thought really cheered us up!

Many Westerners think that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu. This is, of course, a silly belief. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
Like most people from the West, I was first introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films. Some Chinese kung fu stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world. The cool and impressive performances they gave in films like Rumble in The Bronx and Enter the Dragon made them household names in the US and elsewhere.
However, my own personal interest in kung fu was actually encouraged by a hip-hop group. Wu-Tang Clan, founded in the early 1990s in New York City, is one of the most famous hip-hop groups in history.
In their songs, they sometimes mention philosophical concepts that come from Wudang Quan—the style of Chinese martial arts from which they take their name—and the Shaolin Monastery. I was just a teenager when I first started listening to Wu-Tang Clan—little did I know that I would actually end up living in China later in my life！
I myself do not practice kung fu. However, the concepts behind it are quite interesting to me. There is a Bruce Lee quote that I often think of when I'm struggling with challenges in life. "Be formless... shapeless, like water," he once said. By this, he meant that you should be ready to change your attitudes or beliefs when you face difficulties. I think this is a good way to deal with life.
