Once there was a teenage boy who was known as a fast runner in his village. He dreamed of being more successful and only1 winning every race.

One day, the boy took part in a running race in his village. He won the

200, 100 and 50-meter races without any 2 . He was proud of himself and received great applause (掌声).

3  his grandfather stepped in and challenged him to a race with two unexpected competitors, an old man and a blind girl. The boy4 it was unbelievable but accepted.

In the race the boy finished first while the old man and the blind girl were still at the starting line. With joy he waved (挥) his hands at the crowd. But5 kept silent.

"Why don't people give applause for me like before?" he asked his grandfather.

During the second race, the boy took the hands of the old man and the blind gill and walked 8 with them to the finish line. The crowd gave them a standing applause.

The grandfather smiled and said, "The crowd did not applaud for any one of you. They applauded for 10 you all ran the race together."

Facing the race of life what matters is not just winning but how you run the race.

Wu Lidi, a 48-year-old cleaning lady, has a great interest in painting. Recently, she was surprised and deeply moved by a special show of her painting works held by students at Nanjing University.

The paintings were Wu's works on a blackboard hanging on the first floor of a student dormitory (宿舍) where she works. The paintings included wonderful natural scenes, the colorful school and so on.

During the show, many students left handwritten messages to Wu. The messages included "Thank you for your blackboard paintings that have accompanied (陪伴) me through four years of my youth", "You have created a wonderful world with your painting brush" and" I hope you will stick to what you love".

Wu has had an interest in painting since she was young. After she became a cleaner at Nanjing University, she started painting on a blackboard. Though she is very busy at work, she still tries to find time to create blackboard paintings. She also learns and practices painting skills from online videos in her free time. She is widely known by the students. They often call her" a cleaning lady who could have become an artist".

Wu said," I love painting, so I'm happy to do it. I want to give the students a different feeling, and hope they will feel happy when they see the paintings.'

Wu is thankful to the students who held the show for her. And she will continue to create more paintings that will accompany every lovely student.

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (嫩枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very hardy, but with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard that had enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil (土壤), three of them died. Only one was alive.

It grew very slowly. And it didn't look like a tree because it was only a little taller than the grass in my backyard. Later, I found that it was starting to die. Most leaves of the poor plant were turning yellow and falling down.Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer(肥料)，but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was wondering if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving with in the leaves. It was a bird carefully building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I Iooked at it. I thought maybe this old tree wass till useful. It might not be healthy or pretty but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree reminded me that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and healthy or old and sick. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Do you think backpacks are important for students? Do you think backpacks are useful!? You may say yes. But a lot of schools in America are banning (禁止) backpacks in class now. Here are some reasons (理由).

Students may bring something unnecessary or dangerous to school. They may put phones into their backpacks and they may carry foods. To do with these problems, some schools make a rule - No backpacks in classrooms.

Students' backpacks take up too much space in the classroom. Because of them, the hallways are always full of backpacks. Without them, the classroom will be clean and tidy.

  ▲  Backpacks=Bad Backs! Some backpacks are big. If a student takes a heavy backpack,

he or she may have problems in the neck, back and shoulders (肩膀). Many schools ban the use of backpacks to help students keep healthy.

With the rule, students don't have to take backpacks during school hours. They must keep them in lockers (储物柜). Do students like such a rule? 

Some of them think the rule is good. They are happy to put their backpacks into the lockers before walking into the classroom. But some of them don't like it" Without a backpack, it's hard for me to take so many things with my hands," Amelia said." I keep losing things, like my cards," a seventh grader Nikitha said. "I'd like to keep my backpack because my locker isn't near my classroom," said Kemezis.

There was one small thing that I still remember now. In the past, all the kids in my neighborhood waited for one thing on summer evenings 一 the Ice Cream Truck. When we (听到) the song The Piano Man from the truck's loudspeaker (喇叭), kids up and down the(大街) would cry, "The Ice Cream Truck is coming!"

If the Ice Cream man didn't see any kids, he would drive away. So we'd run (快速) to our moms for coins (硬币). We also asked younger brothers and sisters to (停止) the truck.

For most of us, ice cream is the first thing we like to (花费) our money on. It is our first time to know the value (价值) of a coin and our first (/rɪəl) love.

Shadow Puppet (皮影) shows started in the Han Dynasty. It is old Chinese art and it has a long history. One day, a man saw(children) shadows (影子) under the sun. He got a great idea. He made a show like that.

During a shadow puppet show, (actor) stand behind a white screen (屏幕) with lights behind it. They hold the puppets very close to the screen so the people can see the puppets (easy).

Last week, we talked with Wang Weifang who is quite good playing in shadow puppet shows. He told us thatwas hard to hold a puppet." You must keep it high for the whole show. You also need (keep) your wrist (手腕) at 90 degrees (度) to make the puppet face the people." He also taught us how to do a puppet show.

These days, people often watch TV or (go) to the movies. Shadow puppet shows are not so(popular) that young people even know nothing about it. Wang and his friends work hard they want to make more people know about the art. What great players!

These animals were in danger and went back in the wild in China in the mid-1980s. Today, the number of these animals got about 10,000 in the country. In May 2022, nine milu babies were born

in the Daqing Mountain nature reserve (保护区). 

●Living places.

Milu deer usually live in wet places. This is the first time for them to live in the Daqing Mountain nature reserve.  At first, the workers there were very worried. But they found that milu deer have warm coats to keep warm.
