When I was seven years old, my family created an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive. After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what they should do. Each had its own job.

On the fifth day a tragedy happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their "earthquake", one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up their tunnel building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.

My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone. Although much time passed, I still thought of that ant farm. Mum hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.

Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learnt that they should be admired for their hard work.

But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another. Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

    1. (1) What can we know from Paragraph 2 and 3?
A . The writer broke the glass farm because it made his face B . The ants died one by one because the tunnels were destroyed. C . The writer's mother wanted him to learn how to feed ants. D . The ants gave up the tunnel building because they were busy doing other things.
    2. (2) What did the writer come to realize a few years later?
A . Teamwork is very important not only for ants but also for us. B . The ants that gave up should not be admired. C . Unlike people, working hard is not so important for the ants. D . The ants are able to make an amazing world for people.
    3. (3) What does the writer want to tell us through the last paragraph?
A . We must build many tunnels in our lives because tunnels are easily destroyed. B . Giving up is a good way to protect ourselves when we meet troubles. C . When we meet difficulties, we should accept them and try to overcome them. D . Adversity is not common, but people should not be afraid of it.
    4. (4) Which is the best title for the passage?
A . An ant farm B . Ants fear adversity C . What my mum taught me D . Good lessons from ants

Slowly but surely, Amy and her grandparents were making progress. Boxes of all sizes were placed on top of each other throughout the house. Amy's grandparents had lived in the house for years and they had collected many things.

The dining room was full of memories. Amy's grandfather kept many fine dinner plates(盘子)from his hometown. Amy remembered that they ate from the red, yellow, and blue plates during important holidays.

After carefully wrapping up(包裹)the plates and putting them into a box, Amy lifted it up and moved it out of the way. But the box was too heavy. It suddenly fell from her arms and dropped to the floor. All three of them heard the plates shatter.

    "I'm sorry!" Amy apologized.

"It's okay, " her grandfather said quietly. "It was an accident."

They opened the box and, sure enough, many of the plates were broken. Only a few remained whole. Looking at the small pieces, Amy felt really terrible. She knew these plates were passed down from her great grandparents and …

"Don't worry," her grandmother said, patting her on the back. Carefully, they put the broken pieces into a rubbish bag.

They continued packing for a little while, but Amy still felt very sorry. She was trying very hard to think of a way to make it up for her grandparents.

    Soon, Amy's father came.

" I have to go, " she said. " Dad is here to pick me up. "

She kissed her grandparents both, picked up the bag of the broken pieces and left.

" What's that? " her father asked, as Amy climbed into the car.

Amy looked at the bag in her hands as an idea came to her. " This, " she said, " is an art project. "

The following day, Amy went to an art store and bought everything she needed. Then she started to work. She used a thin board as the base. Then she took out the colourful plate pieces and glued them in a creative way on the board. When it was dry, Amy wrapped it up.

A few days later, Amy's family had a big dinner at her grandparents'new house. She handed her gift to her grandparents.

" This is fantastic, Amy! " said her grandfather.

" I can't wait to hang it up in our new home, " Amy's grandmother said as she gave her a big hug.
