There is an old man named Liu Xiaosheng. He lives in Chongqing. Before retiring(退休), he was1foreign language professor at a university. Now he is famous for providing free English2for children in a village in Guizhou Province.
The story started32012. That year, Liu and his family spent their summer in the village. He happened to see a girl learning English. Then the girl4to read him a passage in English. Liu was shocked to find the girl had really bad pronunciation. Liu thought5. Soon he decided to teach the girl English for free. The news spread across the village6, and more and more children came to learn English from him.
So far, more than 100 local students7Liu's classes. Many of them entered universities. The villagers are thankful to Liu. They once tried to pay money or give gifts to Liu,8he refused to accept them. Liu said that teaching had become a part of his life, and he did it neither for fame(名誉)nor for money.
"I hope I can offer some help to the students and encourage them9English well," Liu said. He10mind continuing to work after retirement. As long as he's in good health, he will keep teaching English to children.
There was once a farmer. He had a very big1and a smart dog. One day, he organized a competition between his dog and his rabbit. He made a hole in one of his biggest fields, and2a carrot and a bone in it. He wanted to see which animal would find them first.
The rabbit was very excited, and he was busy3the carrot, digging here and there. He was completely4that he would find the carrot and the bone. But the dog wasn't optimistic(乐观的) at all. After he looked for the bone for a short time, he lay down on the ground5. And then he began to complain(抱怨). He thought it was difficult for6to find one bone in such a big field.
The rabbit dug for7. With every new hole, the dog complained about how difficult this was. The rabbit, on the other hand, kept on working hard. When there was no8in the whole field left to dig, the rabbit dug a tunnel(隧道) to right under where the dog was lying all the time. There he found the carrot and the bone. And this is how the dog9the competition. In fact, he found the right place at the very beginning. But he failed to find the bone because he only complained and didn't try at all. When we do10difficult in our life, we should learn from the rabbit.
Is there a way to quickly recall (回忆起) information just before taking an exam? Walking backward might be a good way. Scientists in the study said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Scientists asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, they were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk ten meters forwards. The second group walked ten meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked twenty questions about what they saw in the video.
The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more correct answers than the other two groups. This suggests that the connection between time and space is important in terms of how our minds form memories. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle(角度) compared to walking forward. This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.
Walking backward is not just good for our brains. It's also good for the rest of our body. Compared to walking forward, it's more challenging. This can help us upgrade our health, according to New Scientist. Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories.
Walking backward could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees. Walking backward also keeps our spines(脊椎) strong and fit. This might be why many old people like walking backward.
Having worked in a nature reserve(保护区) for 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability—he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their saying." I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy," he added with a big smile.
The 52-year-old's home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled," In the 1970s, people were so poor. Birds were often killed as food, so almost all the children including me in the village were good at using slingshots(弹弓)."
His life changed in 1989, when a couple hiking through the mountains visited Baihualing. They asked him to be their guide and lead them to good bird-watching spots. He said," That was the first time I had made money from birds without killing them."
Inspired(激励) by that, the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds. In the following ten years, more bird-watchers visited the village. The village became a popular choice for bird lovers, and most villagers have turned into bird protectors and took part in serving bird-loving tourists.
In the village, there are more than 60"bird guides" like Hou. More than 20 guesthouses which have hosted visitors from more than 100 countries bring in a total income(收入) of 1.5 million yuan every year." During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day. Thanks to the birds, our life is not what it used to be any more."Hou said, adding that he takes his 3-year-old grandson with him every day to feed birds and teaches him to love and respect them.

My name is Xue Mingyan. I'm a middle school student from Sunshine Middle School. I'm in Grade 8 this year. Last Wednesday, we did an experiment in the lab. It was really interesting. It is about how the air moves when we blow with our lungs (肺). We learned much from it. Now let me tell you some information about the experiment.
A Bag of Wind You can move more air than you might think just by blowing with your lungs. What you need ●Helper ●Tape(胶带) ●Large plastic dry cleaner's bag What you do 1. Fold over the bottom of the bag and tape it closed. Leave a small hole open for clothes hanger to go through. 2. Ask the helper to hold the bottom of the bag, and see if you can blow through the small hole and fill the bag with air with one breath. 3. Press the air out of the bag. Ask the helper to hold the bottom of the bag again, and blow air into the small hole while keeping mouth about 25cm from the hole. |
What happened The second time, you could blow a large number of air into the bag. The stream of air created a partial vacuum(部分真空) when it entered the bag. That pulled a lot of surrounding air in it, filling up the bag. |
