When Ben delivered milk to my home one morning before Christmas,he wasn't his usual sunny self.He told me a customer had left without paying the bill,$79,nor leaving her new address. So it meant that he had to cover the loss.
"She was a pretty woman, " he said, "With six children and another on the way, she was always saying, ‘I'm going to pay you soon when my husband gets a second job.' I believed her,but she left.Isn't it annoying? "
"Give her the milk.Make it a Christmas present to the kids who need it. " I said.
The holidays came and went.On a sunny January morning two weeks later,Ben was rushing to deliver milk when he saw a woman running down the street, waving money. He recognized her immediately--the woman who didn't pay her bill.
"I'm so sorry, " she said. "I really have been meaning to pay you. "
She explained that her husband had come home one night and announced he'd found cheaper apartment. He'd also got a new job. With all that happened, she'd forgotten to leave the new address. "But I've been saving, " she said. "Here's $20 toward the bill. "
"That' s all right, " Ben replied. "It's been paid. "
"Paid! " she exclaimed(惊叫). "What do you mean? Who paid it? "
"I did, " Ben said, "It went to the children as a Christmas present! "
People in the United States honour their parents with two special days;Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible(有责任心的) citizens. They give love and care to their children.
These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes (象征) a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(公墓). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is "the thought that counts ". Greeting card stores, florists(花匠), candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flow more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客) easily, but truly can't manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
Two China astronauts, Fei Junlong(费俊龙) and Nie Haisheng(聂海胜), are safely back on earth after their Shenzhou VI spacecraft successfully touched down on the grasslands of Inner Mongolia Sunday at 4:32:50 pm, ending a five-day mission and China's second manned(载人的) space flight.
"I want to thank the people for their love and care, " Fei said during the ceremony, in which both astronauts were given flowers and seated in chairs.
The Shenzhou VI crew spent 115 hours and 32 minutes in space, and travelled 2 million miles (3.25 million kilometers) during their mission, which set new human spaceflight records for China.
Fei and Nie were sent into space on October 12th, Beijing time on China's second manned spaceflight, the first to carry two astronauts. The spaceship lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre(酒泉卫星发射中心) in the Gobi desert(戈壁沙漠) almost two years to the day after China's first manned launch.
That first mission, Shenzhou V, launched astronaut Yang Liwei(杨利伟) into orbit on October 15th, 2003, China is the third country to independently launched humans into Earth orbit after Russia and the US. But unlike Yang's flight, which the public did not get to see much of, much of Shenzhou VI mission from lift-off to landing was shown live on national Chinese television. With Shenzhou VI, China has "achieved another milestone in space exploration, " said Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Chinese NPC during his speech which was broadcast live on CCTV.
