Midwife Priscilla Sitienei has become a famous woman as the oldest primary school student in Kenya. Turning 99 years old on February 11,she sits in class among some of the pupils she helped bring into the world.

Sitienei, who comes from the remote village of Ndalat in Nandi county, had always wanted to become a doctor. Though that opportunity never came, she instead used her traditionally learned skills to help mothers deliver their babies safely at home.

Still, she never let go of her dream to get an education. What gave her an inspiration was a decision made by the Kenyan government in 2003 to make primary education free. However, it wasn't until almost a decade later that she could finally enter a classroom.

David Kinyanjui, the head teacher at Leaders Vision Preparatory School, said that while it was challenging for Sitienei to adapt to the class in 2011, her determination to get an education convinced the school authorities to give her the offer. Sitienei is fondly known as Gogo — or grandmother in her native language.

"Gogo could only communicate in her mother tongue of Kalenjin and Kiswahili but she was willing to start learning at the lowest level so that she could learn some English," Kinyanjui said.

Sitienei said: "I had the idea when my great granddaughter dropped out of school. I wanted to inspire children, especially girls, that education is important in shaping their future and getting out of poverty. Being a grandmother, I have seen some of my grandchildren drop out of school due to early pregnancies or lack of interest and the best way to show them the importance of education was by going back to school myself."

She is heading to New York City for a showing of a film about her journey. It is titled Gogo.

Sitienei is in her sixth year of primary school. She says her aims were far more practical than becoming a movie star.

    1. (1) What did Sitienei do before she went back to school?
A . She treated women and babies in Nandi county. B . She worked at Leaders Vision Preparatory School. C . She delivered babies in Nandi county. D . She played a role in a film.
    2. (2) Which of the following statements about Sitienei is FALSE?
A . She helped bring some classmates into the world. B . She is the oldest primary school student in Kenya. C . She faced difficulties in adapting to class. D . Sitienei means Gogo or grandmother in native language.
    3. (3) Why did Sitienei want to go back to school?
A . She wanted to get out of poverty. B . She wanted to get deliver babies more safely. C . She wanted to be the oldest primary school student in Kenya. D . She wanted to show her grandchildren the importance of education.
    4. (4) Why is Sitienei going to the USA?
A . To travel for a while. B . To become a movie star. C . To see a movie about her story. D . To inspire American people.

Laughter is part of the human language around the world. Unlike English or French, we don't have to learn to speak it, and we're born with the ability to laugh. Studies show that the first laughter appears at about 3.5 to 4 months of age, long before we're able to speak.

As the saying goes, "Laughter is the best medicine." Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free and easy to use. Nothing works faster to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. It helps relax your whole body leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Laughter also helps you fight against diseases. It can improve the function of blood vessels (血管) and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack.

And the good feeling you get when you laugh remains with you even a few minutes later. It helps you keep a positive, optimistic attitude toward difficult situations, disappointments and losses. Laughter gives you the strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult days, a laugh or even simply a smile can go a long way toward making you feel better.

Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting.

And it helps build strong and lasting relationships, and it unites people during difficult times. So it's necessary to create opportunities to laugh with others. More often, people are very happy to share something funny because it gives them an opportunity to laugh again. When you hear laughter, find it out and ask. "What's funny?" And you can make time for fun activities such as bowling, golfing or karaoke.

In short, the ability to laugh and have fun not only makes life more enjoyable but also helps you solve problems, connect with others, and be more creative. The more laughter there is, the more benefits you'll receive.

    1. (1) The author develops the second paragraph mainly by ____.
      A . telling stories B . providing examples C . discussing questions D . showing research findings
    2. (2) Paragraph 3 mainly talks about ____.
A . the difficult times in one's life B . the benefits of laughter to our mind C . the physical health benefits of laughter D . different ways to feel better about oneself
    3. (3) Why does the author suggest laughing with others?
A . It strengthens the relationships between people B . It makes people look much younger. C . It helps treat many kinds of diseases. D . It creates opportunities to be friendly.
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the text?
A . Man—the Only Creature That Laughs B . Laughing Makes Us Younger C . Different Types of Laughter D . Why Should We Laugh?

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.

Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition (认知) after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.

The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.

"The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转)and translate shapes," Levine said in a statement.

The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls.

The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.

    1. (1) In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?
      A . Building confidence. B . Developing spatial skills. C . Learning self-control. D . Gaining high-tech knowledge.
    2. (2) What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?
      A . Parents' age. B . Children's imagination. C . Parents' education. D . Child-parent relationship.
    3. (3) How do boy differ from girls in puzzle play?
A . They play with puzzles more often. B . They tend to talk less during the game. C . They prefer to use more spatial language. D . They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.
    4. (4) What is the text mainly about?
      A . A mathematical method. B . A scientific study. C . A woman psychologist D . A teaching program.

    How to Reduce Food Waste

Food waste is a huge problem in many countries. The good news: Each of us can help solve it. .

    Make a plan

, think about exactly what you need for the week, make a list and then stick to it. Actually, more often we throw things in the shopping cart that sound good or look new, and then we let them sit in the back of the fridge for a few weeks.

    Get creative with repurposing food

Before walking straight to the trash with your old carrots or cabbages, ask yourself: The answer is probably yes. You don't need to follow any difficult recipes (to tum older produce into a fresh new dish by watching videos online).

If you realize that you won't be able to use food before it's too late, tum to the trusty fridge.

Did you know you can freeze almost anything? Your bread, your vegetables, your fruits -even your milk! Freezing food helps keep its taste and nutrients(营养).

Don't be fooled by that "sell by" date

Generally speaking, these labels are a best guess by producers as to when their products will be freshest. They're not fixed rules about when that cheese has to go straight to the trashcan.

. The next time you do a sweep of your kitchen, remember that these dates are just guidelines. When in doubt, do a smell test. If it doesn't pass, you can just bury them in your garden to make the soil rich.

    A. Freeze everything

    B. Don't forget your fridge

    C. Before you shop for groceries

    D. Can I make these into something new

    E. Can you create something out of them

    F. However, that's exactly what many of us do

    G. Here are four simple ways to start reducing your food waste at home

Every Saturday afternoon, Jimmy and his dad would go to the park to play baseball. They always walked past a homeless man who always sat at the same street corner. Jimmy's dad always gave the man some money. "Someday, I'll pay you back, John!" the man said. "Sure, Wayne," Jimmy's dad replied.

One day, Jimmy held his dad's hand, asking, "Dad, how does that man know your name?" John answered, "Oh, when I was in college, I knew Wayne. He was on the brink (边缘) of a big discovery that could bring him a patent. Anyway, things didn't go well for him. So whenever I see him, I give him some money. And he tells me he's using it for lab supplies. I don't think it's true, but I pretend I do. And when he tells me he'll share the profits of his discovery, I tell him I believe it, too."

Jimmy didn't understand anything his dad was saying, but he felt the compassion(同情) in his voice. So he stopped his dad and gave him a big hug. Jimmy didn't know it was his last hug. That night, while Jimmy's dad was out for his evening run, his heart stopped beating.

The only person Jimmy was living with was his grandmother, Wendy. And they ended up living in an old small house. Life got very tough for them. Although Wendy was old, she found a cleaning job. But her health started to fail and Jimmy was very worried about her.

Jimmy became very quiet. To cheer him up, one Saturday, Wendy went to the park and threw the ball around with Jimmy. After that, they came out. And there at the corner, Jimmy saw his dad's homeless friend, Wayne.

"Wait, Grandma!" Jimmy cried. "There's something I have to do!" Jimmy walked up to Wayne and turned his pockets inside out. He said to Wayne, "Sorry, but I only have twenty cents." "That's okay. Every cent helps!" Wayne said. "How's your dad? I haven't seen him for a while."
