In 1968, while majoring in piano at the Hawaii campus of Brigham Young University, Kan entered a beauty contest sponsored by the local Chinese Chamber of Commerce. She won second place, and as a result got to travel around the world. The life-changing experience marked the beginning of her career in fashion, beauty, communication and cultural exchange.

In 1986, Kan returned to China, producing and hosting the television series One World, which was the first show ever hosted by a Chinese-American on the television network, and was a national hit. Other important projects of hers include the ABC documentary China: Walls and Bridges, which initially explored different forms of spirituality in the country over the ages.

As I say all the time, if I stay away from China for six months, I already miss so much of what is happening there! The Chinese saying "a year—small change, three years—big change has held true all this time," Kan says.

Kan has never stopped doing what she loves. She is currently planning to do a 10-part television series exploring and highlighting the most interesting aspects of 10 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu. "I firmly believe that a TV series featuring these major Chinese cities is not only timely, but also necessary to educate, enlighten and entertain by showcasing the Chinese people as they live today. This will help dispel some of the misunderstandings about China in the world," Kan says.

Chinese elements are seen everywhere at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, from stadium construction and brand marketing to mascot manufacturing (制造), providing strong support for the grand football event.

The golden-bowl shaped stadium is located 15 kilometers north of Doha, capital of Qatar. Serving as the largest sporting venue in Qatar, it hosts important matches. To make the football pitch (场地)and the audience area cooler and more comfortable, independent cooling stations were built outside the stadium, sending cool breezes into the stadium. Hassan Al Thawadi said the complex structure proves the great skills and service ability of Chinese firms, adding that those who watch the games in the venue should be grateful to Chinese engineers and constructors.

In 2020, Chinese manufacturer Yutong was selected to provide service vehicles for the Qatar World Cup. The company equipped its buses with a device that protects the motors from sand and mud, employed liquid-cooling power batteries and adopted an intelligent temperature control in the buses. It is reported that Qatar has imported 1,500 buses from China, including 888 electric ones to meet the transportation demand. It marked the first time for a major global sports event to use Chinese new energy buses in such large quantities.

In a desert 80 kilometers west of Doha, there is a vast photovoltaic (PV) power station with a total area equal to 1,400 standard football pitches. Built by the PowerChina Guizhou Engineering Co., Ltd., the 800 MW Al Kharsaah Solar Power Plant has over 2 million PV panels that are able to generate 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity for Qatar each year. It can supply around 300,000 local households and mainly reduce 900,000 tons of CO2 emissions on an annual basis.

More Chinese elements can be seen both on and off the field in Qatar. The appearance of referees Ma Ning, Shi Xiang and Cao Yi marks the first time in the recent 20 years for Chinese referees to judge World Cup games.

    1. (1) What can we learn about Hassan Al Thawadi from Paragraph 2?
A . He thinks much of Qatar's climate. B . He knows the stadium's function well. C . He speaks highly of football watchers. D . He greatly praises Chinese contributions.
    2. (2) What do we know about the Chinese Yutong buses?
A . They are cheap and comfortable. B . They are used in many fields. C . They are provided with high technology. D . They are easy to make and operate.
    3. (3) How is Paragraph 4 developed to introduce the PV power station?
A . By giving advice. B . By listing numbers. C . By making comparison. D . By explaining reasons.
    4. (4) What is the passage mainly about?
A . Chinese elements shine at Qatar World Cup. B . Chinese goods become quite popular in Qatar. C . Chinese referees first judge World Cup games. D . Chinese companies make great efforts for Qatar.

Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area was very different in the past.

The evidence was found inside a piece of earth sediment(沉积物) collected by researchers from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment, they found forest soil estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals.

Johann Klages is a geologist, working in the Institute's Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He said an examination showed that the material formed on land, not in the ocean.

The researchers estimate that the area – about 900 kilometers from the South Pole – had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The average yearly temperature in that area is about 40 degrees below zero Celsius.

The examination results showed "a dense network of roots that spread through the entire soil layer," the Helmholtz Center said in a statement.

The dark brownish-gray soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Klages put that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants and while no animal remains were found, there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.

The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life.

    1. (1) According to the passage, we can learn that ________.
A . dinosaurs were from Antarctica B . Antarctica was always extremely cold C . the ocean floor is made up of sediment D . the area has been experiencing climate changes
    2. (2) What surprised the researchers?
A . No animals left. B . No fertilizer to fuel plants. C . Roots spreading through the soil. D . The rainforest experiencing polar night.
    3. (3) Which column is the passage probably from?
      A . Science. B . Entertainment. C . Society. D . Fiction.
    4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Antarctica, Once a Warm Rainforest B . Earth Sediment Found in Antarctica C . Antarctica - an Extreme Environment D . New Antarctica Found by Researchers

    How to Solve Worry Problems

The Great Nobel Prize winner in medicine, Dr. Alexis Carrel once said, "Businessmen who do not know how to fight worry die young." Then how can we find a quick, surefire recipe for handling worry situations? Here are a few basic steps to deal with different kinds of worries.

    Get the facts

Why is it so important to get the facts? Because unless we have the facts, we can't possibly even attempt to solve our problems intelligently. This is the chief cause of worry. Half the worry in the world is caused by people trying to make decisions before they have sufficient knowledge on which to base a decision. If a man will devote his time to securing facts in an objective way, his worries usually disappear in the light of knowledge.

    Analyze the facts.

However, getting all the facts in the world won't do any good until we figure out what these facts mean and interpret them. In fact, merely writing the facts on a piece of paper and stating our problem clearly goes a long way toward helping us to reach a sensible decision. Therefore, when we are worried, sit down and write down two questions-and the answers to these questions, "What am I worrying about?" and "What can I do about it?"

    Arrive at a decision

Worry is killing. So we will probably save our life by sitting down and writing out all the various steps, we could take and then writing down the probable results of each step and calmly coming to a decision. It is the failure to reach a definite decision that drives men mad.

    Act on that decision

Don't stop to reconsider. Don't begin to hesitate and retrace our steps. Don't lose ourselves in self-doubting which causes other doubts. Don't look back our shoulders.

    A. Write down our worries.

    B. There comes a time when we must decide.

    C. Once we have made a decision, go into action.

    D. Without the facts, we will be left in confusion.

    E. And so do housewives, horse doctors and bricklayers.

    F. It is much easier to achieve this after writing them down.

    G. Experience has proved the enormous value of arriving at a fixed decision.
