I've finally become a big brother! It was quite an exciting day, but something 1 happened while Mum was going to give a birth in the delivery room (产房). I was waiting 2 the delivery room when a 3 came up to me and asked in a soft voice, "Hello, I 4 your leg. Could you please tell me how it has influenced you?" Her question got me thinking. I got my man-made leg 5 doctors had to cut off my left leg after a road accident. Not many people have asked me 6 my life is going without the leg. Then, the lady dropped her7 and looked at the floor and said, "My son just had an accident and the doctor says he has to have his leg cut off."
I felt sad for her and wanted to 8 something to cheer her up. In my mind, I 9 the right words to say. After what seemed like a long time, finally I said, "Auntie, your son won't have a 10. He'll feel different but you can teach him that difference is special." I told 11 how Mum always encouraged me to continue learning and to be independent. I also said12 that I had learned to do many things that other 13 people might find difficult. I've swum, cycled and even taken part in marathons.
The lady smiled and thanked me. As she waved goodbye to me, I heard my newborn sister 14 in the delivery room! I thought to myself: What an unusual day, with an unusual question from a 15.

People all love watching fireworks. But letˈs stop and think about the price we pay for just a few minutes of excitement.
First, the amount of money we spend on fireworks is too much. The excitement is gone in a moment. What we really are doing is burning money. Yet, year after year, thousands of cities and towns spend our tax(税)dollars on firework shows. Those tax dollars would be put into much better use feeding the hungry and housing the homeless.
Second, there is the matter of pollution. Fireworks have chemicals(化学品)that are harmful to people and animals. Over the years, these chemicals will pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink.
Third, letˈs consider the rubbish left behind after a firework show. What a mess! We would expect that those who set off the fireworks would pick up the rubbish afterwards. But they donˈt. The mess they leave behind shows the kind of attitude(态度)many people have towards our environment.
__________ Some fireworks can hurt your hearing, especially the fireworks used in public shows that give off a big BANG. Hearing loss costs too much to pay for. Besides all the safety warnings, we still see hurts and deaths as a result of fireworks. About 10,000 Americans are hurt every year by fireworks. According to the Council on Fireworks Safety, children from the ages of five to fourteen are the ones most often hurt. Those sparklers(烟花棒)that seem so harmless cause 10% of the hurts.
In my opinion, all fireworks should be stopped selling. Public firework shows should be paid for through volunteer money, not tax dollars. Finally, those people playing with firework shows should be responsible for cleaning up the mess they make.
It is believed in some ways that the daughter is the father's lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time my father has been a very vague figure(模糊的形 象)to me. He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else.
When I was in primary school, my father was never there to pick me up, and he never came to any of my parent-teacher meeting. He was always busy doing projects. I remember when I was in middle school, my head was badly hurt in a PE class. During my operation,my father was nowhere to be found. This hurt me most. At that moment, I considered( 认 为 )my father as a cold-blooded man who did not care about me at all.
But things seemed different at my high school graduation ceremony(毕业典礼), where I was chosen to represent my class to give a speech. My father, once again, told me he had a business trip in a place outside the city and would be unable to show up(露面). "Don't come. I will be very nervous if I see you," I told him.
I remember my speech went smoothly. After the ceremony was over and I was about to leave, I suddenly noticed a familiar-looking man sitting in a corner of the hall. It was my father! I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down my face. "Well done," he said. His eyes were also filled with tears.
Later, I found out that my father had managed to finish his work by staying up late, and he drove for eight hours to get back. He had been sitting in the corner because he didn't want me to see him. My father remembered every word in my speech.
For much of my life, I described my father as a cold blooded man who only cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was obviously not true. At my graduation ceremony, I could feel my father's deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing, and seeing may not be the fact if we don't perceive(感知) the world with our hearts and minds. There's no doubt that life doesn't lack(缺少) love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
①Have you ever shaken on a cold day? You may not have noticed, but as you shake, your body warms up. Shaking is one way your body stays warm. It happens when messages are sent from the nervous system(神经系统)to the muscles(肌肉). This is how it works.
②The nervous system has two parts. One part is the nerves. They look like long, thin lines. Their job is to carry messages to all parts of the body. The spinal cord(脊髓)and the brain make up the other part of the nervous system. Messages from the brain travel down the spinal cord. They go to the rest of the body through the nerves. Muscles receive these messages.
③Imagine waiting for a bus on a street corner. Itˈs a cold day, the bus is late, and you feel cold. Hereˈs what happens.
④A control center in your brain senses that youˈre cold. It transmits a message down the spinal cord to all the nerves. The message races through nerves that connect to other nerves. Then it goes from the nerves to the muscles. The message says, "Warning! Prepare for action!"
⑤When a muscle moves, it makes heat. That is why you get warm when you run or play soccer. When your muscles get the message that you are cold, they get busy. First they tighten(收缩), then they loosen(松). They tighten then loosen over and over again. This makes you shake. You also get warmer.

"Now, " she said (happy), "you can write your book! When you had your job, you didn't have time to write down what you were thinking about. Now, you are free. You can do what you like and make your dream (come) true!"
"Yes," said the man sadly, "but what shall I live on while (write) it?"
Then, she took out a small box opened it. a large amount of money!
"I've always believed you are talented man," she told him. "I knew that someday you would write a great book. So every week, out of money you gave me for everyday use, I saved a little bit. Now this money can help us through the year."
With her trust and confidence, he (fight) with his pen. Therefore, one of (great) novels of American literature, The Scarlet Letter (《红字》), was born.
So far, a lot of the famous stories (follow) a word of encouragement of an act of confidence by a loved one or a best friend.
Until the beginning of July, there has been no rain in northern Italy for over 100 days. Add to that the high temperatures, and the locals get very dry conditions. This is the most serious dry spell(干旱期)for that area in the past 70 years. Because of this situation, the country's longest river, the Po, is drying up!
This is bad news for several different reasons. The fresh water of the Po provides drinking water for northern Italy. Besides, farmers in this area need the water of the Po to keep their crops growing. What's more, the flowing river water is used to create about half of the hydroelectric power(水力发电)for Italy. Its drying up means that more natural gas(天然气) will be used, which is bad for the environment.
There have been some interesting discoveries from this lack of rain, however. Between Florence and Milan, a long ship sunk (沉没)in 1943 appeared because of the low water levels of the river. Now many tourists and locals come to see this ship. A German tank has also appeared out of water near Mantua. At other places along the river, people can even walk on the sandy river bed. Although this may be interesting, people in Italy and around the world are hoping for the return of rain to refill the Po!
