A Children's Literature-Research Tips: Finding Information on Authors
Your author study requires you to write, in at least 3 pages, a summary of what the author has written, how the works have been received, what awards the author has been given, as well as any connections you have made by reading much of the author's published books.
Below is a list of places to find such information. You will have most success with the items, if you look at them in the order they are listed.

You may find many of the same resources in this database as you found in Literature Resource Center. The two databases are produced by the same company. However, there is enough different information that it is worth checking.

"HEY, HOW YOU DOING'? I'm Courtney. What grade are you in? Third? What's your favorite book? Elephant and Piggy? Yeah, I got it. "
If you thought you'd walked into a library with a greeting like that, you wouldn't be too far off. In fact, you've entered the workplace of Courtney Holmes, aka the Storybook Barber.
Two years ago, Dubuque, Iowa, held its first annual Back to School Bash, offering needy families an opportunity to learn about free resources in the community. Holmes agreed to participate. He was holding down two jobs at the time—one with the city's public works department. the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest haircutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to underprivileged kids, so they'd look sharp on that first day of classes. But then he had a lightbulb moment: "The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me," Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Five- to ten-year-old boys would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes snipped away. If they stumbled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they'd review the book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes—just like in school, only more fun.
Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids. "I get it. You have four kids, and you're working two jobs. Sitting down and listening to them read is the last thing you have time to do. You have to clean the house or cook dinner. So I say bring your kids in and let them read to me. "
Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the free snip-and-reads. "There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn't have a stutter," said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, "He read it with no problems. That inspires me. "
Holmes and his family have recently moved from Dubuque to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to resume his role as the Storybook Barber. "The way the world is today with guns and violence," he says, "it's a safe haven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books."
Primary teachers are responsible for guiding children through the formation of many important life skills, and also watching over their students' social development. Primary teachers come into contact with about 30 students every day, and teach them a variety of subjects. Many hours are spent before and after class on planning, preparation and correction. One should be a very patient, caring, yet firm person to be able to deal with the demands of children in the four to twelve-year-old age group.
Secondary teachers teach specific subjects to various groups of students. Just like primary teachers, they spend an amount of time planning and preparing lessons and correcting homework—their duties are not restricted to face-to-face teaching. Dealing with twelve to eighteen-year-olds requires a wide range of skills.
If you become a primary teacher, you will need to decide whether to be a "generalist", teaching a wide range of subjects, or a "specialist", teaching only one or two. Most primary teachers are specialists. Generalist teachers spend the greatest part of their day with one class, which means that they spend more time with the same children. Specialist teachers have more time away from their students. It is therefore very important for generalist teachers to develop a strong working relationship with their students.
The unique rapport you can develop with a particular set of students is one of teaching's greatest pleasures. However, the disadvantage of primary teaching is that if you have a difficult student, you will be forced to deal with him or her, all day, every day, throughout the school year. Teachers need to work out strategies to get themselves and their students through such difficulties.
Primary teachers today are generally four-year trained. They usually do a three or four-year undergraduate degree, and if this degree does not include teacher training, they will have to undertake postgraduate study in education as well.
One way to prevent anxiety from getting out of control is to recognize its benefits. It is a mistake to think that we'd make better decisions if only we keep our feelings under control. Instead, a mix of feelings like anxiety and logical thinking leads to sound decision-making. It's true that there is plenty of research showing that higher levels of anxiety can make us more likely to avoid risks in our decision-making. There is also evidence that anxiety can increase the attention you pay to relevant information.
Recent studies have shown that people who are anxious about their relationship (for example, they fear to be abandoned) tend to be better at recognizing people who tell lies and are more likely to raise the alarm when danger is present.
In the real world though, it's worth realizing that feeling anxious once in a while is extremely common. It communicates to others that you care, and what's more, it's probably a sign that you are intelligent. At least two published studies have identified that people who score higher on measures of anxiety also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. This seems reasonable: if you're a thinker, you are sure to be always thinking about the future and imagine possible plots, including bad ones.
The important thing, if you are a worrywart, is not to let your fear destroy your dreams. And don't bury your head in the sand Instead, act on your fears—do the research as well as preparation, so rather than walking blindly into that which you fear, you meet the challenge in full readiness.
When anxiety beats you, or casts a shadow over your life, this is a serious problem. No one is denying that. But like everyday anxiety of this kind that you feel before a presentation or an interview, you needn't see it as your enemy. Anxiety is an important feeling, developed through evolution. As for people who are fairly anxious by nature, there is reason for cheer, too. Your nerves are a sign of your watchfulness.
Listen to them and act on them. Then you can turn your nervousness to your advantage.

A boy named Ali had a large and harmonious family, happily living with his sisters, parents and grandmother.
