Rollins College's graduate, Elizabeth Bonker gave a powerful speech at the school's graduation ceremony using text-to-speech technology. "You have a voice. Use it," she advised graduates. It seems funny that a non-speaking autistic (孤独症患者)encourages you to use your voice. However, her moving speech touched not only her fellow classmates but also the worldwide audience with a powerful message of hope.

A recent study found-that more than a third of all heat deaths worldwide can be attributed to climate change. Parts of the U. S. are feeling the danger now. Heat waves, like the one that has held the Northwest United States in its grip for the past week, are deadly.

The human toll (伤亡人数) of the record-breaking temperatures that struck both coasts of the U. S. and Canada in recent weeks is already enormous. At least 80 people have died in the U. S during the past few days of extreme heat;in British Columbia, the number is in the hundreds. And, as more data trickles in, those numbers are likely to rise even further.

A mountain of scientific research has shown that climate change is making heat waves longer, hotter, more likely, and more dangerous. A recent study published in Nature Climate Change adds additional detail by assessing the human cost of that extra heat:In June, a team of some 70 researchers reported that for the 732 sites on 6 continents they studied, on average, 37 percent of all heat-related deaths can be blamed directly for climate change.

The study underlines the urgency with which we need to address human-caused climate change, says Ana Vicedo Cabrera, lead author of the study and a climate change epidemiologist at the University of Bern, in Switzerland.

"Climate change is not something in the future:It's something in the present, and it is already affecting our health in very dramatic ways, "she says. Extreme, deadly heat events like the one hitting North America are a warning of what will come. "We can expect that what we've seen in the past is going to increase exponentially in the future. Our choices for the future are more of this, or a lot more of this. We can still choose between bad and worse, "he says.

Either way, it is well past time to start helping people across the country prepare for extreme heat, says University of Washington's Kristie Ebi, a global environmental health expert. Some actions can be simple, like making sure people have access to fans, air conditioning, and shade. But the basic message is simple, according to Ebi:We can choose to save lives. "Heat kills, but it doesn't have to, "she says.

    1. (1) What is the main cause of the heat deaths?
      A . Air pollution. B . Climate change. C . Overpopulation. D . Geographical Location.
    2. (2) What does the underlined work "enormous" in paragraph 2 mean?
      A . Zero. B . Moderate. C . Little. D . Huge.
    3. (3) What can we learn from Ana's words?
A . Climate change was an issue in the past. B . Heat waves will definitely come next year. C . Human-caused climate change needs solving. D . The future of human is between good and bad.
    4. (4) Which saying can best describe Ebi's attitude?
A . It's better late than never. B . Rome was not built in a day. C . Where there is a will, there is a way. D . God help those who help themselves.

Earlier this year I traveled to Turkana in Kenya. I was there to take pictures of the "broken food system".

As a special visitor, I was greeted with songs and dances. The locals used to sing and dance all the time but now Turkana is silent and has been for some years. No one is singing or dancing anymore because they have no food, nothing to celebrate. Many of them are surviving on one handful of corn a day and water, which they can get just every two days.

I met Tede Lokapelo, a local farmer who described the experience of a six-year drought (干旱). Tede used to have 200 goats, but now he has only seven left. He told me that this drought has taught him a hard lesson:it is too difficult to keep animals. He lives on animals. His traditional way of life has been completely destroyed now. Without the food aid they got, Tede is certain that they would starve because there are no other sources to feed themselves left.

Sadly, the same can be heard in almost any developing country around the world. Almost one billion people go to bed hungry each night. The food system is broken. In Turkana, not enough rain has fallen since 2005. They measure rainfall not in days or weeks but in minutes. More and more people are being forced to rely on food aid, but people like Tede don't want food aid. They want to work and create their own economy. It's our responsibility to fix the system so that they can support themselves.

Drought is impossible to avoid but hunger is manmade, and unless enough money is provided to develop a basic infrastructure (基础设施) for people in the area, thousands more lives are sure to be lost.

    1. (1) Why do people in Turkana no longer sing or dance anymore?
A . Because they have no time. B . Because they are tired of them. C . Because they are always hungry. D . Because they have other interesting things to do.
    2. (2) Which of the following is NOT true about Tede Lokapelo?
A . He raised 200 goats in the past. B . He has never received any food aid. C . His traditional way of life has been changed. D . He found it hard to raise animals after the drought.
    3. (3) According to the text, ______ .
A . about one billion people can't get enough food each day B . it has never rained since 2005 in Turkana C . more and more people are willing to rely on food aid D . what people in Turkana really want is the food aid
    4. (4) What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A . To show drought is serious in the world. B . To tell readers the serious situation of food short. C . To ask more people to give food aid to people in Kenya. D . To make it clear how to help people suffering from drought.

Self-confidence refers to your belief in your skills, qualities, and ability to succeed. Having confidence in yourself is not only important to your health and well-being, it can also affect how you are perceived by others. However, not everyone feels confident in their abilities.

    Focus on Your Strengths

When you are in a situation where you want to appear confident, it can be helpful to focus on the skills and abilities you feel most confident about. Then focus on highlighting or projecting that quality.

Positive self-talk, on the other hand, has been shown to be strongly associated with success. If you tend to engage in negative self-talk, start working on re-framing your thoughts to be more positive and optimistic. For example, you might work on reminding yourself that there are positive sides to every situation. Talking to yourself positively is a great way to boost your sense of self-efficacy so that you feel better able to succeed and deal with whatever you are facing.

    Look for Inspiration

Looking to confident people you admire reading inspirational statements or repeating a motivating mantra can also be a way to boost your confidence when you need it. The key is to choose realistic role models or statements that reflect achievable goals.

    Avoid Making Comparisons

While finding sources of positive inspiration can help you show confidence, it is important to avoid comparing yourself to other people unfavorably. You may make such comparisons whether you are looking at their performance appearance or other qualities.

    Take on New Challenges

Doing so, however, can actually increase your anxiety and lessen your faith in your abilities. Research has found that practicing the things you fear can help reduce anxiety and improve self-confidence.

    A. Talk Yourself Up.

    B. Keep Yourself Relaxed.

    C. Choose something you know you are good at.

    D. You can avoid being confident from time to time.

    E. If so, it can possibly make you feel worse about yourself.

    F. You might be happy to avoid the situations that leave you feeling less confident.

    G. Fortunately, there are things you can do to show confidence in any situation.

Once a man was driving down the road when he noticed an elderly lady stood on one of the most deserted sections of the road. Even though the light was not bright in the evening, the man saw that she needed some help. So, he parked his car in front of hers and approached her.

The older woman became concerned because no one had stopped to help her in the past few hours, and now this guy was approaching her with a smile. She became worried that the man would hurt her because he appeared poor and hungry.

The man could see she was scared and understood how she felt. "I'm here to help you. My name is Bryan Anderson", he continued, addressing her. Despite her fear, the older woman told him that her car's tire was flat.

"Ma'am, It's cold outdoors; why don't you wait inside my warm car while I change the tires," the man replied. Having said this, the man took his toolbox and began changing the flat tire of the Lady's car. The man quickly replaced the tire. The older woman rolled down her car window and started talking to him as he finished.

She introduced herself, said she was from a far distant place and was passing through, and expressed her gratitude to him for helping her. After setting aside tools and a flat fire for her automobile, the man simply smiled as he shut the trunk (后备箱).

"How much should I pay you?" asked the elderly lady.

The man had reason for being paid because this was not his job. He was assisting her in her time of need. Instead, he told her that if she genuinely wanted to repay him, she should help someone in need the next time she saw one. "And at that time, think of it as payment for this deed of mine." the man added.

On the way back to her destination, the old lady noticed a small cafe a few miles down the road. She pulled over and went in to relax and grab a bite before the final leg of her journey.
