    Calling all photographers!

    We've all been spending more time indoors lately. Whether you've been killing time looking back at photos from holidays past, risking taking walks to local sites, or busy working at home, we want to see your best photos on an archaeological theme. Send them to us for your chance to win the first prize in our yearly CWA Photo Competition and have your work showed in the magazine.

    The winning image and three runners-up will be featured in CWA. The overall winner will get a free 2-year subscription(订阅) to the magazine.

    The judges' decision is final, and the results of prize-winners will be announced by 15 October 2021.

    It was about 10:15 p. m. Janice Esposito got off the train at the Bellport, New York, got into her car and began driving home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove automatically: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then—bang! Out of nowhere a car crashed into Esposito's car, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Injured but mostly shocked by the crash and by the airbags that popped up, she got stuck in the vehicle.

    As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed when he heard the crash coming from not far outside his bedroom window. DiPinto, a volunteer firefighter, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed out.

    The first car he came upon, 2, 000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once making sure the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito's car straddling (跨坐) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a bell sound, which signalled a coming train.

    DiPinto rushed to Esposito's car and hit on the driver's side window. She just looked at him. "I don't know where I am," she said.

    "You're on the railroad tracks," DiPinto yelled. "We have to get you off right now!" The train was traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour toward them. The driver's door couldn't be opened due to the crash, so DiPinto ran to the passenger side. He threw open the door, pushed aside the airbags, seized Esposito's arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he finally got her out and walked her to safety as quickly as he could.

    Within seconds, the train crashed into the car. "It was like a Hollywood movie," DiPinto told reporters the next day.

    "Last night," said Greg Miglino Chief of the South County Ambulance, "the hero arrived in pajamas (睡衣), not in a fire truck. "

    Losing weight comes with a lot of health benefits—including making your brain sharper. Yes, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions (认知功能) such as memory and attention. There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University.

    Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn't lose weight dropped even further.

    The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that he's seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way—eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. "If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well," he says.

    The mental health of children is connected to their parents' mental health. A recent study asked parents to report on their children's mental and physical(身体的)health as well as their own mental health. One in 14 children aged 0〜17 years had a parent who reported poor mental health, and those children were more likely to have poor general health and a mental or developmental disability.

    Being mentally healthy during childhood includes reaching developmental milestones, learning healthy social skills and how to solve problems. Mentally healthy children are more likely to have a happy life and are more likely to work well at home, in school, and in their communities.

    A child's healthy development depends on their parents who serve as their first sources(来源) of support in becoming independent and leading healthy and successful lives.

    The mental health of parents and children is connected in many ways. Parents who have their own mental health challenges, such as dealing with anxiety (fear or worry), may have more difficulty- providing care for their children compared to parents who describe their mental health as good. Caring for children can create challenges for parents, particularly if they lack(缺乏) support, which can have a negative effect on a parent's mental health. Parents and children may also experience shared risks, such as living in unsafe environments, and the like.

    Fathers are important for improving children's mental health, although they are not as often included in research studies as mothers. The recent study looked at fathers and found similar connections between their mental health and their children's general and mental health as for mothers. Fathers and mothers need support, which, in turn, can help them support their children's mental health.
