These people are studying English. However, they are now facing some problems.

I am Pablo. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. I'm trying to change little by little. For example, I don't use the past tense (时态). I always say, "I drive him to the office this morning" instead of "I drove him to the office this morning".

My name is Maria Luisa. I'm teaching myself English, and I'm good at grammar. However, it's really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbors and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.

I am Li Ping. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I'm very nervous when I speak English. I don't want to make any mistakes because I'm afraid people will think that I'm stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn't good. When I speak, people often say, "What? Say that again".

I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I'm studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don't understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged.

    1. (1) Who may say, "I go to bed late last night"?
      A . Pablo. B . Maria Luisa. C . Li Ping. D . Yoshi.
    2. (2) What would be the best advice for Maria Luisa?

It is popular to travel by bike in China. China has a huge population. And it is said that there is at least one bike for every two people. Of course, many people in China ride bikes for sport or exercise, but it is also a much more commonly accepted means of everyday transportation, as compared to countries such as the United States.

If you are living for a long time in China, chances are that you will want to buy your own bike so that you can use it whenever you want. Even if you don't use a bike for everyday transportation, owning one can be a great way to enjoy the sights in the countryside. However, if you are just visiting China, renting a bike can be a more convenient choice.

It is important to choose the correct bike for your use. You will find that in China, the one—speed style of bike is popular. These bikes are great if you want to ride around in the city to see the sights. They are quite comfortable and easy to ride. You can often rent a bike for a day for about 15 dollars.

However, if you wish to ride on some of the rural paths, a mountain-bike style would be a better choice. They are great for different kinds of road surfaces, providing for a safer ride. If you are planning to have a wish to tour and still be able to carry packages with you, then a touring bike would be the best choice. These are the most expensive to rent, but are very suitable for carrying packages and even some of your luggage along with you.

    1. (1) If you are traveling in Beijing, you had better __________.
      A . buy a bike B . borrow a bike C . steal a bike D . rent a bike

A . It is worth at least 15 dollars. B . You can't ride in the countryside

B . you have some packages to carry while travelling

Earthquakes strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, but there's no way to tell when. If an earthquake happens, it may cause many deaths, injuries and damage. So you need a good preparation ahead of time. Decide how and where your family will get together if separated. Choose an out--of--state friend or relative that the family members can call after the quake to report where they are and how they are. Know the safe places in each room: under the strong tables, desks, or against inside walls. Keep enough food, water and other things, including a flashlight, a radio, medicines and clothing.

During the earthquake, you should keep a clear head and never be too nervous to know what to do. Protect your head and neck with your arms. If possible, take a book, a pillow or any other things to protect yourself from falling glass and ruins. If you are indoors, you must immediately lie under any strong furniture. If outdoors, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, walls or power-poles. If you are in a narrow valley, move to the centre of it and look up for falling stones. If you are in a car, move to the side of the road and stop the car. Do not stop near buildings, power lines or on or under bridges. Stay in your car until the shaking stops.

Do not move a badly injured person unless he is in great danger after the earthquake. Do not use the telephone immediately unless there is a serious injury or fire. Turn on your radio for instructions and news reports. Be prepared for aftershocks. If you want to leave your home, post a message inside your home telling your family members where you can be found.

    1. (1) To prepare for an earthquake, we should make sure of ________.
A . when an earthquake may happen
B . the place where we can find our family
C . how to receive instructions and news reports
D . the money with which we can buy food and water
    2. (2) If we are driving when an earthquake happens, we should ________.
A . find a strong building to hide in
B . leave the car as soon as possible
C . go on driving quickly to leave the area
D . move to the side of the road and stop there
    3. (3) From the passage, we know that during an earthquake ________.

A . we should keep calm and know what to do clearly
B . the trees and walls can protect us if we are outdoors
C . we should protect our necks with a pillow or a book
D . falling glass can be used to help us
    4. (4) After an earthquake, we should ________.
A . move an injured person quickly
B . use the telephone immediately
C . turn on the TV to get news reports
D . leave a message before leaving home

Once there was a man traveling in a faraway village. As he was passing the elephants, he stopped at once. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages. It was clear that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn't try to get away. "Well," the trainer said, "when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them, so they never try to break free."

How could it be? These animals could at any time break free from their ropes. But because they were always stuck right where they were, they believed they couldn't.

Just like the elephants, how many of us go through life believing that we cannot do something, just because we failed in it once before?

C . they thought they could not D . they got on well with the trainer
    4. (4) In the last paragraph which of the following can be put in ________?

二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
  • 5. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.

Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.

Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. Ideal (理想的)study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.

Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity.

You'll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you've set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.

Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.

This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.

    A. Try to stop this bad habit by offering some sort of reward.

    B. Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.

    C. Finally, spend time with your kids when they're studying.

    D. One of the best ways to form good study habits for your kids is to design a schedule that they keep to.

    E. Hold them to the schedule they create for themselves.

    F. Pick a place where your children can study properly.

    G. Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too.

As a fourteen-year-old girl, you may think that the biggest problem you can probably face is failing one of your classes in high school, but not everything is as easy as it seems. My parents are going through a lot lately. We recently moved from Houston and bought a house in Dallas, and my dad had almost no money left in the bank due to the fact that he had to pay the water and electricity company in order for them to be available in my house.

My brother, who was a nice, happy, free-caring six-year –old boy, just like every other, started to become very distant from us the first week we moved into the house. As much as we tried to ask him what was wrong, he wouldn't tell us. I was really confused by the way he acted, because he normally was a nice and kind little boy who would often go out and play with the neighbours and would just be outside, enjoying the day. That little boy completely turned around and became a very distant, cold child. He would keep silent and sit in his room the whole day with the door closed. He would not go out even for supper, and we were wondering what happened.

We went to talk to his teacher who said that he was very shy when it came to talking in front of the other kids, but he had developed a little confidence and started to play with the kids in his class. The teacher mentioned that he and a kid from a higher level started "hanging out "away from the rest of the kids. My mum thought of it as a good thing, thinking it meant that my brother had started to make new friends, but I knew it meant something else. I tried talking to my brother even though he didn't want to, but he didn't say anything dealing with the bigger kid.

    Paragraph 1:

Until one day, he came home, crying, and it seemed I was the only one who noticed.

    Paragraph 2:

After a while, he gave in and started telling me that the bigger kid had stolen his lunch.
