PERU is a country on the Pacific coast of South America with three main areas: narrow, dry, flat land running along the coast, the Andes Mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. Here is some information to refer to when planning your tour in Peru.

    Amazon Rainforest Tour

A short flight from Cusco takes you there. You'll spend one day travelling by boat to your accommodation in the middle of the forest. You can then spend three days exploring the rainforest with a local guide and enjoying the plants and animals unique to the rainforest.

    Machu Picchu Tour

This four-day walking tour will take you on amazing paths through the Andes Mountains on the way to the city of Machu Picchu. After reaching your destination, you will have a day to explore and be amazed by this ancient city. Especially amazing is the Incas'dry stone method of building. Inca builders cut stones to exact sizes so that nothing was needed to hold walls together other than the perfect fit of the stones.

    Cusco Tour

Spend four days enjoying the unique Spanish and local Indian culture high in the Andes at Cusco. Stay in a local hotel, visit the museums, admire the architecture, enjoy the excellent local food, and go shopping at the local markets.

    Lake Titicaca Tour

Enjoy the beautiful countryside as you spend a day driving along the new highway connecting Cusco to Lake Titicaca. There, a boat will take you to stay with a local Uros family on an island for three days.

I spent a fantastic day in Varanasi. And it wouldn't be wrong to say that the day was one of the best days when I felt more alive than ever, I was lost in exploration and struck by the beauty of the city. Varanasi, one of the most ancient cities of India, is located on the banks of the river Ganges, which gives it a breathtaking look. There are around 85 ghats(staircases that lead to the river), which are perfect places to walk and explore the city.

When I reached the hotel, it was 11 am in the morning, and I was exhausted. But I didn't want to waste the day sleeping. So, I immediately took a bath, ordered food, ate it like someone who hadn't eaten for days, and then headed out for the adventure.

Assi Ghat, one of the most famous ghats of Varanasi, was only 1.5 km from my hotel. So, I decided to walk to Assi Ghat. I found several temples, shops for various items, fast-food corners, and auto drivers looking for customers. The weather was quite fantastic as it was spring season.

When I reached the Assi Ghat, I got my first glimpse of the river Ganges. The shiny blue water stretched under the infinite blue sky gave a brilliant look. The platform above the staircase was crowded with enthusiastic visitors and vendors (小贩) selling delicious foods. Below stairs, there was a 50 m wide sandy area stretching along the length of the river, which gets filled with water in the rainy season.

After taking a short night walk, I reached my hotel happy and satisfied. I slept early to wake timely and enjoy the sunrise in the ghats. The orange sun and its reflection on the water, the magnificent look of the city, numerous migratory birds, and chilled air helped me forget my tiredness.

I will never forget this happy day.

In the United States, waiting at tables is more a profession than a job. Wages are not important and staff expect to live off their tips. The more professional the service given, the more massive the reward is. In Britain, the experience tells a different tale. Money and respect are handed out in more carefully guarded measures to those who serve food.

Yet lack of respect hasn't stopped students from taking waiting jobs to make up for a steadily shrinking bank balance. Nicola Sizer is finishing a four-year teaching degree at college. A large debt at the end of her first year forced her into waitressing in a Greek restaurant in London. Most of her money comes from tips, but they're variable." Some nights, people don't leave you anything." she says." People forget that the waitress isn't there to have a good time."

Dave Turnbull, district officer, admits there are particular problems with tipping." It depends on what form the tips are in," he says." Also, there's nothing in law to say that the service charge goes to the waiter." But he admits that working at the right place can be financially very rewarding.

Jane Stocks is 34 and has been waitressing for five years. She's been at the Chicago Pizza Pie Factory in central London for one year. Waitressing is her career choice—she enjoys the social aspect of the work and the fact that her opinion counts.

However, not everybody can handle waitressing. Jane Stocks agrees:" You've got to be able to take a lot of responsibility, a lot of stress and concentrate on a lot of things for a long time. You've also got to be all different things to all people."

    1. (1) What does the writer say about waiters in the USA?
A . They receive low wages. B . Their work needs less profession. C . They are not given enough respect. D . They make a living largely on wages.
    2. (2) Why did Nicola Sizer start waitressing according to the text?
A . To enjoy herself. B . To pay back some money. C . To try a different profession. D . To work in a Greek environment.
    3. (3) Which problem does Dave Turnbull mention?
A . Waiters are generally poorly paid. B . A law is needed to be made for waiters. C . Some waiters earn much more money than others. D . Waiters may not receive money intended for them.
    4. (4) What can we know from the last paragraph?
A . Waitressing is a relatively easy work. B . Waitressing is a job with professional requirements. C . Everyone can never handle the work of waitressing. D . Waitressing only needs concentration on food order.

Some issues like climate change or the ongoing pandemic (大流行病) are increasingly complex and dynamic. Yet solving problems like these requires new approaches that extend beyond traditional ways of thinking. A study led by Yale Professor of Psychology, Paul O'Keefe, found that having a growth mindset (思维模式) of interest may activate this type of innovation.

Professor O'Keefe established in earlier studies that people hold different beliefs about the nature of interest. Those with a growth mindset of interest tend to believe that interests can be developed and cultivated, while those with a fixed mindset of interest tend to believe that interests are inborn and simply need to be "found".

For example, in one task, research participants were instructed to create new college majors by combining two or more existing academic Arts or Science programs at their university. After coding and analyzing the ideas they generated, the team found that people with a growth mindset of interest were more likely to bridge programs across the arts and sciences to create new majors like computational economics rather than creating majors that drew from only one of those areas, like computational chemistry.

As Professor O'Keefe pointed out," This research provides a useful direction for organizations whose products and services call for creative solutions. Take smartphones for example. You need not only computer science and engineering knowledge, but also an understanding of psychology and visual design to create a better product. Employees with a growth mindset may be more likely to frame innovative ideas that bridge multiple areas of knowledge to achieve better solutions."

The benefits of a growth mindset of interest may also extend to those seeking employment. This is a pressing issue because many people are becoming unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having a growth mindset of interest can help job seekers expand their interests and become more adaptable to different fields, and tend to learn new skills.

    1. (1) What's the author's opinion about the world today?
A . It is witnessing various types of innovations. B . It is undergoing great and profound changes. C . It faces more varied and complicated problems. D . It has removed many traditional ways of thinking.
    2. (2) What can best replace the underlined the word "bridge"?
      A . Connect. B . Plan. C . Choose. D . Study.
    3. (3) What does the author want to illustrate with the example of smartphones?
A . Hi-tech products can boost people's general thinking. B . Hi-tech products are needed in multi-subject research. C . Improved technology gives birth to highly popular products. D . Making innovative products needs knowledge of many fields.
    4. (4) What is the author's suggestion to those who are seeking employment?
A . Learning practical skills. B . Broadening their interests. C . Staying safe in the pandemic. D . Knowing their pressing issues.
