Australia lies in the Southern part of the earth, one of the seven continents of the world with an area of nearly 7. 7 million square kilometers. It is also the world's sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the U. S. and Brazil. Canberra is the capital.

Australia is like the U. S. in many ways. The first people to live in were aborigines. Most people live in or near cities. They speak nearly the same English, though there are some very different words that Australians use. For example, they say "bush" instead of countryside, "g'day" instead of good day or hello in American English.

The weather in Australia is warm and pleasant. The warmest months in Australia happen when people are having winter in the U. S. A special point is that few Australians live in the middle part of the country. Because there they can not get very much rain and it is very dry.

The Great Barrier Reef, which is made up of coral (珊瑚) and algae (海藻), is in Australia. It is such a good sightseeing, for it's the world's largest living coral island, about 1,250 miles long.

Sports in Australia seem quite popular. Cricket, the national sport, has lots of fans as well as Australian Rules Football. The boomerang (回旋飞镖), which was used in the wars by the aborigines and is used as a toy by children today, is also pretty famous.

There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own.

    ●Plant flowers, grass or trees.

●Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there—keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin (垃圾箱).

●Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room. This saves a lot of electricity.

●Turn off the tap (水龙头) when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper.

●Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep cold air in.

●Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.

●Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.

    ●Use both sides of paper.

●Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or the lakes nearby.

●Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.

You don't have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make each day Earth Day.

In one way, it may be thought that failure (失败) is a part of life. In another, failure may be regarded as a step towards success.

The "spider-story" is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a hole on a hill from the English. He watched a spider(蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have got confidence from this and to have gone on to beat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb(电灯泡),  made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were you in high spirit then? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?

Second, is the goal(目标) you are trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: "If I am successful in this, where will it get me?" This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn't be doing anyway.

The third thing to remember about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself" even though you may have failed. Remember, "You can't win them all."

    1. (1) Robert Bruce was mentioned in the passage to show that        .
A . people who fail are not lonely B . animals can help people sometimes C . nature will help us if we are hard-working D . confidence is important for one to be successful
    2. (2) Edison's example shows us that        .
A . he liked to do other kinds of work B . he invented many kinds of light bulbs C . failure may be a way towards success D . he was a man of many important inventions
    3. (3) If you are not sure about what success will get you, you'd better        .
A . change your goal B . go on with your goal C . not care for that D . work even harder on your goal
    4. (4) It can be learned from the passage that        .
A . one should try not to fail B . one's failure is another's success C . one should take failures seriously D . one should learn lessons from failures
    5. (5) This passage is mainly about         .
A . two great men B . two sides of failure C . ways to keep away from failure D . the right attitude(态度) towards failure

There are many online (网上) food shopping sites. This is very surprising. Things like CDs, books, and DVDs sell well online. But it is quite different to sell food online because people like to see food with their own eyes. It is very important for people to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Shoppers like to choose their food by its colour. They also want to touch and smell it. But some people like to go to the same shop to buy food, because they think the food there has a very good quality. So if the food is always good, they may also feel comfortable buying it online.

Boxes of fruits and vegetables have been delivered to homes around Britain for a few years now. Dried or canned (罐装的) foods are almost always the same, but things like apples are not. People may want to choose their own apples so they can take the ones that aren't bruised (碰伤) or the ones that look nice. Buying dried or canned food online is easier. A person can buy this kind of food on the Internet and then buy fruits and vegetables at a store or a market.

Now people can also buy food through supermarket websites. There people can find most of the things that supermarkets usually sell. Other food websites sell different types of food. Some sell food from one part of the world such as Asia. Others sell food that is hard to find in supermarkets. There are also websites that sell sweet foods such as cakes and candies.

The food is usually delivered by the next day or even on the same day. People still need to be careful, though. They must check to see if the food is fresh when they get it. It is a good idea for people to find out how far away the food is being delivered from. It is also a problem if the company does not use refrigeration (冷藏) when they deliver food that should be kept cold. If traveling long distances in the summer to deliver the goods, this is important.

Recycling is one of the best environment success stories of the late 20th century. Recycling m using things again, and not wasting things l plastic, paper, and glass. But we could do more. It should not just be a popular thing to do –we n to do it.

The Japanese are very good at recycling b they live in a very small place with a lot of people in it. They do not want to share small amount of s with rubbish. But even so, the Tokyo area alone is t to have three million tons of rubbish right now.

In 1996, the United States recycled 57 million tons of rubbish (27% of the nation's solid waste). People used 7,000 recycling programmes—where rubbish is collected and recycled, and recycling centers—where people take things that can be recycled. Recycling also helps to keep the environment clean.

In Rockford, a city in Illinois, US, the government chooses one house each week and checks its rubbish. I the rubbish does not have any newspapers or metal drink cans, then that house gets a p of at least $1,000.

In Japan, some cities give children recycled paper in return for collecting newspapers for recycling.

    In one year Britain recycles:

    Ø  1 out of every 3 newspapers.

Ø  1 out of every 4 glass bottles and jars.

Ø  1 out of every 4 shirts, trousers and other types of clothes.

Ø  1 out of every 3 metal drink cans.

In China, Hong Kong SAR transported 1. 3 million tons of rubbish to the mainland for r in 1999. And around 535,000 tons of rubbish was recycled in Hong Kong SAR of China itself.

Over half the things we throw away could be recycled. That means we could recycle 10 times as much as we do now.

However, recycling needs a lot of planning and s machines. Also, there is not much use for some recycled things. People need to think of more ways to use things they recycle.
