Would they let her play? She could throw, run and bat as well as any of them, but they let her play only when they needed her. She would have to umpire again. At least she could be part of the game.  Amanda knew all the rules, and the boys could count on her.

Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity.

Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice. Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents.

But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised(临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.

He still went on to win two gold medals—winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn't win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn't know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.

At the Olympics,he also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn't be stopped and just kept on going.

I think Paul Dughi said it best, " It's hard to imagine now that pro athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn't matter what kind he wore. "

    1. (1) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?
A . The adversity Thorpe met with led to his success. B . Thorpe's success was no guarantee of a better life. C . Thorpe's career brought him both gains and losses. D . Thorpe suffered many hardships despite his success.
    2. (2) Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot?
A . To prevent the foot from injury. B . To make the shoe fit the foot. C . To stop the shoe from being stolen. D . To show his problem-solving skills.
    3. (3) What most likely led to Thorpe's failure to win the javelin?
A . Loss of his own sports shoes. B . A casual attitude towards the event. C . Lack of experience in the event. D . A shortage of talent for the event.
    4. (4) Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe?
      A . Loyal and enthusiastic. B . Genuine and creative. C . Tough and strong-minded. D . Selfless and good-tempered.

    Do you like spicy food?

What's your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili-red pepper-in their dinner while others can't get enough of it.

Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chili is related to childhood experiences, and cultural influences affect our taste buds too. But the latest study has found that a person's love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported.

"We have always assumed that liking drives intake-we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect these personality traits with intake of chili peppers, " said Professor John Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.

But before you look at the study, you should first know that "spicy" is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty. It is, in fact, a burning sensation that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people's longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.

In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about certain traits of their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.

By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.

Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason some people can withstand spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. "It's not that it doesn't burn as badly, it's that you actually learn to like the burn, " Hayes explained.

    1. (1) What's the meaning of the underlined word "loathe" in the second paragraph?
      A . dislike B . fear C . put up with D . adapt to
    2. (2) What did Professor John Hayes and his team discover from their study?
A . what we eat actually helps to develop our personalities B . Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females C . Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food D . People are wrong to treat spicy as a kind of taste rather than a feeling
    3. (3) Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?
A . Because their taste buds have become less sensitive B . Because they love the burning sensation C . Because they want to challenge themselves D . Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns
    4. (4) What's the main idea of the passage?
A . What he or she likes to eat mainly decides on his or her personality B . That a person enjoys spicy food depends largely on the personality C . His or her childhood experiences decide on his or her personality D . His or her cultural background decides on his or her personality

Friends are important in our life, because no one wants to be lonely. However, some people have difficulty in making friends and they often feel lonely. According to a new study from Chicago University, the reason is that this kind of people have brains (脑) different from common people. And they often feel unsafe when facing strangers.

Does that mean they have no way to become happy again? Scientists of this study have thought up ways to help these people deal with their loneliness. They provided four steps for getting out of loneliness.

"It's not enough for people just to get in touch with other online. That's because most people don't show their true selves there, "said Dr. Cacioppo, one of this study's scientists. Another step is to get an action plan. As "action speak louder than words", people need to be active to communicate with others. They also need people with the same interests. Also, they should try to expect the best from each activity. Who Knows what good things are waiting for us?

On his way home, Jonathon saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar. She rubbed her head against his hand and began to purr (发呼噜声). She reminded Jonathon of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky's fur had been long and gray too.

Jonathon petted the cat for a while. Then he said, "I have to go," and continued home. To his surprise, the cat followed him.

When Jonathon was home, he walked up the porch steps and went in the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Jonathon made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Jonathon sighed. "I know it's not a good idea to feed a stray cat, " he said, "but you look so hungry! I can't sit here and eat without feeding you too!"

Jonathon put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Jonathon watched, she ate every scrap of turkey and then began to clean her face and paws. "Wow!" Jonathon said, "You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you. "

Jonathon finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted (乱蓬蓬的). Jonathon remembered that Smoky's brush and toys were stored in the garage. "I'm going to clean you up a little, " Jonathon said to the cat.

Jonathon found Smoky's brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat's fur began to get lighter. "Hey!" Jonathon said, realizing the truth. "You're not gray—you're white!"

After her brushing, the cat climbed onto Jonathon's lap and purred. "You're so friendly, you probably belong to someone," Jonathon said. "I bet you're just lost." When Jonathon's father came home, Jonathon showed him the cat that had stretched out in a patch of sun on the porch. "Why don't you make some signs to place in the neighborhood," his father suggested.
