When I was a kid, l used to ride my mountain bike everywhere. It was one of my favorite things to do. But as I1, l stopped riding my bike. When I entered a university in Australia, I didn't own a bike anymore. It can be very2to ride a bike in cities. There are not many bike paths, and cars sometimes hit cyclists(骑手) , and3kill them. Now, in Beijing, I'm having fun on the bike again. I ride my bike to anywhere I want. Riding bikes4me feel comfortable and it is a fun way to explore (探索)the city! If we all try to ride bikes more often and drive less, there will be less5.
When children read to Danny, he never stops them or corrects them. He just sits quietly and listens patiently. Danny is a "listening1". He is part of a reading program for children. The name of the program is R. E. A. D.
This program helps2children's reading and communication skills in a special way—reading to dogs, but not any dog. R. E. A. D. dogs are therapy (治疗) animals. "We all know that learning to read well is very3. Teachers always ask pupils to read aloud. 4reading aloud in class is very difficult for some children. They are afraid that other children will5them," says Danny's trainer, Tony Nevett. But a listening dog like Danny won't make fun of them. The children will feel safe. It's also fun for them. They even start to6reading aloud. As a result, their reading gets better.
This program7helps the dogs. Many of them live in dog shelters (收容所)and need a home. After some8, the dogs learn to be comfortable with people they don't know. This helps them to be9for adoption (收养).
The R. E. A. D. program started in the USA. "We have many success stories," says Tony. He hopes the program will spread to more places. Children who10the program learn to love reading. This helps them succeed in school.

My dad didn't love me. It was Mom who held the family together. Dad just went to work and came home every day. Mom forgave (原谅) a list of things I did wrong while Dad scolded me about them.
In the past, I stole a piece of candy. Dad made me take it back. Then he told the man I stole it and that I should pay for it. However, it was Mom who understood I was just a kid.
I still remember how he taught me to ride a bicycle. I told him not to let it go, but he said it was time. I fell and Mom ran to pick me up, but he waved her off (挥手让……走开). I was so angry that I got right back on that bike and rode it myself. He didn't even fell embarrassed (尴尬的)or worried and just smiled.
When I went to college, Mom wrote me lots of letters. He just sent checks (支票)and a little note about how great his lawn (草坪) looked but I wasn't playing ball on it.
Whenever l called him, he acted like he wanted o talk, but he always said, "I'll get your mother. "When I got married, it was Mom who cried. He just blew his nose loudly and left the room quietly.
All my life, he said, "Where are you going? What time are you coming home? No, you can't go.
Dad just didn't know how to show his love. Now I understand him and his love.
Since 2018,the English listening and speaking test in Beijing has to be separated(分开) from the written one. And the listening and speaking test is becoming more and more important to the students who are taking senior high school entrance exams in Beijing. The test accounts for (占)40 points on their full English exam. During the 30-minute test, students have to fill in blanks, answer questions and retell stories after listening to different materials.
Students take the test on a computer. They can take the test twice (once in December and again in March) to try to get the highest score.
Liu Haoxuan, 14, was busy practicing his spoken English. That was because he would take anew English listening and speaking test. "It's a good opportunity to push me to speak as much as l can. Though it was hard in the beginning, it's a good thing, "Liu said. He got a low score when he first took it last term. But he kept working hard in order to improve his pronunciation and other skills. He practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. Later, he got a score of 39 on the test.
For Liu Tian you, 14, from another middle school of Beijing, he has his own way to prepare for the listening and speaking test. He uses apps to take practice tests every day. "The apps will score my performance so that I can improve accordingly,"he said. " Also, the practice tests help me learn to take notes properly. They help me understand topic sentences and key words.
①Fill in blanks. ②Answer questions. ③Retell stories. ④Write stories.
Are you interested in trains? It isn't easy. All the trains have to be clean, the engineers need to check to see if everything is working, someone needs to sell the tickets, and the trains must leave and arrive on time. And, most importantly— the trains must be safe.
But in Budapest, Hungary, there is a special railway. Most staff members who work there are children. The name of the railway is Children's Railway.
And it is still taking passengers on journeys through the hills in the west of the city. The train drivers and engineers are adults, but all the other staff members, from the ticket sellers to the station managers(站长), are children between 10 and 14 years old. The children are all volunteers, which means they don't get paid.Anyone who doesn't get good marks at school can't get a job on the railway. The children who get jobs have two days off from school every month to work on the railway.
The trains of Children's Railway aren't toys or models. Each year over 300,000 passengers take the trains to get to work, visit friends or just to see how well the children do their jobs!
A: Would you like to work on Children's Railway?
B: Children's Railway first opened to passengers in 1948.
C: Have you ever thought about the work people do on the railways?
D: They are an important part of the railway system (系统) in Budapest.
E: Almost everywhere in the world, the staff members on the railways are adults.
F: Every year, lots of children want to work on the railway, but not all of them can get a job there.

Two high school students from Canada have invented a magic backpack. It can become a sleeping bag for homeless people.
The two teens, Pasha and Adrianna, worked together for (they) school's science fair. They wanted to do something to help homeless people. They decided (make) the backpack after Pasha's uncle died on the street. Because of mental(精神的)illness,he (become) homeless and started living on the street. She missed her uncle wanted to do something to create a safe place for homeless people.
Then Pasha and Adrianna got the idea of building a home for homeless. Their amazing work is a big backpack. It (weigh) two kilograms and looks like an accordion(手风琴) . When it (fold), it can be carried on the shoulder as a backpack. And when it spreads out, the backpack will become a "house". The space blanket in it keeps people warm during the cold winters. It's 6℃ to 7℃ (warm) inside than outside. During the hot summer months, the backpack can be turned over so that the space blanket is on it stop. It will be much cooler inside. The girls hope that one day in the future they will see homeless people (use) their invention on the street.
What a (mean) thing the girls have done, and it is so touching!
We learn to read at a young age. Our first experience of reading is probably our parents' reading storybooks out to us. Do you remember those bedtime stories? We read fun and interesting facts about animals, plants and the world. We ask why and how. In books, we find answers. Textbooks accompany(陪伴)us all through education. We learn to read, then read to learn, and keep reading to gain(获取) knowledge and grow with the world. It's only through reading that we gain information from different sources(来源). Just everything around us can become knowledge, only through reading.
Because reading is useful, it's better to have the habit of reading right from childhood. Do you know what role bedtime stories play in children's life? Research says that they keep children away from the feeling of worry, and this is good for their health. So parents should bring them good books and help them understand the real joys they hold.
Usually, reading makes us read more in the lifelong pursuit(追求)of knowledge. The more you read, the stronger your mind is. The more you read, the more creative you become. Reading improves your understanding and increases your abilities. It gives you knowledge and makes you more confident. The more you read about others' lives and experiences, the higher the chances for you to become a leader. The more you read, the better you become.
