In the last two school years, I wasn't really interested in Science Research. I concentrated on my lessons but after class, I forgot everything. I'm surprised that this school year, I'm not like that anymore.
Science Research Ⅲ is one of the subjects I'm learning while enjoying it. I was scared at first, thinking this would be the hardest subject for me during online class, but it turned out fun and I could study it well. I love the way Madam Ventura uses a whiteboard and I really appreciate her effort in making explanatory videos about our lessons.
I have learned a lot in research about types Ⅰ andⅡmistakes, statistic(统计的)tools like z-test. Most importantly, I've learned how to write a research paper in IMRaD format with Patricia and Aindrea. Without the research paper writing, we wouldn't have known each other. Overall, the lessons are challenging. Sometimes I have to watch the videos several times, but it is all worth it because our teacher told us that "Time spent learning is time well spent."
There are still a lot to say about my whole experience in Science Research Ⅲ. Because of the research, I made new friends even if we didn't see each other like in face-to-face classes. I have found discussions in classes really exciting. I admire that our teacher is always willing to go an extra mile to make sure we will learn. She is always considerate and approachable. Gradually, I changed, no longer just memorizing and forgetting. Science Research made me a true learner. I now learn by heart. I never thought I'd want to be a researcher, but now I am looking forward to future Science Research classes. I will never forget that this year is the time I became interested in Science Research.
As we become more involved with social media, it often seems that the gap between human connections is widening. But Rob Lawless has proved the opposite. Every day for the last six years, Lawless has made a point of sitting down to have an-hour-long face-to-face conversation with at least one stranger. And even in just one hour, they can reach a deep, satisfying place in their exchanges.
"When I graduated with my finance degree in 2013 and became a business analyst, I missed the feeling of familiarity I used to have with the people around me," he said. He was hungry to meet people organically, not in the serious environment where there was always an agenda(议事日程). So in November of 2015, he decided to launch(发起)his 10KFriends project with the goal of using it to meet 10,000 new people.
Lawless devotes himself to the project. He says that after talking to the strangers, he can find out about their current life situation, their hobbies and so on. Sometimes, he feels like he has become their close friend. Seeing people's smiles after the conversation, he thinks everything has paid off. Usually, the conversations are more random, such as simply talking about football matches or a newly shown film. But they can also be a place for Lawless and the strangers to become closer. He told GNN, "My conversations are more like two old friends talking about their old days and daily life."
In the following months, Lawless will experience a road trip where he will meet strangers from all 50 states. Maybe he'll even pick up a stranger or two hikers on the highway. If you want to learn more about Lawless' project or participate in the project as one of his strangers, you can visit his website or Instagram page.
As human beings, we have always been attracted to the unknown. This fascination also applies to nature, and there are still countless animal species that remain a mystery. So each new discovery is an eye-opener, and deserves to be shared and celebrated.
This is the case with narwhals(独角鲸). These mysterious, shy creatures were recently recorded summering in the Arctic during a successful survey. The research was conducted by two scientists from Hokkaido University in Japan.
Narwhals, normally found deep below the Arctic Ocean surface, and one of the most mysterious creatures on the planet, have until now been hardly accessible to scientists on field trips. This is why this discovery is such a milestone(里程碑).
The most noticeable characteristic of narwhals is probably their unusual appearance. The male narwhal presents a tusk(长牙), which is in fact a tooth that can grow up to three meters in length! But these horned whales are even more unique than their looks would suggest. A separate study conducted by researchers at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, shows that the genetic diversity(多样性)of these animals is surprisingly low. Despite this disadvantage, which has always been considered a bad sign for the future of a species, narwhals have done pretty well for thousands of years, with no signs of becoming an endangered population.
However, since they only live in the Arctic, they are extremely poor in adapting to climate change, making their future in a warmer Artic unclear. What we do know is that research can help us understand these extraordinary animals. It's up to us to contribute and keep narwhal populations safe by protecting their habitat from harmful human activities and global warming. It's the least we can do for these lovely beings that amaze us with their mysterious looks and their unique genetics.
Do you always feel distracted(注意力分散的)when you take a test? Is the time of your attention not more than 5 minutes? Here are some ways in which you can keep your mind sharp.
Exercise your mind. Your brain is a muscle and it needs a lot of exercise as well. You should master a couple of approaches to keep it in the best working condition.
Get enough sleep. On a more genuine note, getting enough rest(7-8 hours)is important for your psychological and physical health. Research has shown that it's unnecessary to stay up throughout the night to review what you have studied before an exam day.
Eat right. The human brain weights about 1.3kg. However, it uses around 20% of the every day calorie consumption. So ensure you eat well for a functioning mind. Keep in mind that if you feed on garbage, your mind will be no superior to a junkyard(废品场).
Truly, associating with individuals and cooperating to achieve some new goals can help your mind develop. Besides, an enthusiastic talk is continually strengthening. Now, go out and have some coffee with your friends or put on your best dress to a party.
A. Lead a social life.
B. Make more new friends.
C. If so, It is time to improve your mind.
D. You will be healthier by taking exercise.
E. The more you use it, the better it will work.
F. You'll barely hold any knowledge in your tired mind.
G. You should keep a long distance from low-quality food.

Nowadays, vegetarian(素食主义的)eating is becoming more popular. Although it does have a good reputation for (benefit)our health, recent news has focused on what could be bad about vegetarian diets, (include)stroke risk, harm to brain health, hair loss and depression.
British researchers (follow)more than 48,000 men and women with no history of heart disease or stroke for about 18 years. Vegetarians had a 20% (high)rate of stroke than meat eaters. Another expert wrote that the trend towards vegetarian diets may lead to a choline(胆碱)crisis, Choline is a nutrient(营养物) is important for brain health and other functions. It can (find)in meat, and our body can't make all that humans need.
So, can giving up meat lead to hair loss? A recent report found that a severe lack of protein, among other diet shortcomings, can lead to it. That's meat contains iron, vitamin B, and zinc, which are all important for hair (grow).
Can vegetarian and vegan diets affect our mood? Research on this is mixed. Some studies have found that going meatless (improve)mood, but others have found opposite. In one study of 400 new mothers, 80 of them suffered from postpartum(产后的)depression. A vegetarian diet was one factor that seemed to make it more likely to be depressed.
Going back to school in September is always cool. Seeing old friends and making new friends are really exciting.
Rebecca was an old friend of Sheila, her classmate. Sheila liked playing football, and Rebecca had the same hobby.
There was a new girl in the classroom. Her name was Mary Brown. Unlike the others in the class, Mary was very quiet. She always sat by herself during lunch. At playtime, she didn't ask anyone to play with her, and no one asked her to play with them either. Rebecca was thinking about going over to talk to her, but that was when they would be able to join a football team in the youth league. Rebecca was so busy that Mary was soon forgotten.
The teacher gave out some homework. It was a composition. Rebecca decided to write a piece about Fiona, which is a cat, a Christmas gift from her dad. As a result, everyone liked Rebecca's composition.
At lunchtime of the third day, Rebecca was about to talk to Mary when Sheila stopped her with an angry look towards the table where the new girl was sitting by herself. Rebecca walked away feeling so embarrassed.
She told her parents what had happened at school. Rebecca said, "I want to talk to a new friend, but I don't want to lose my old ones." Her father thought for a moment and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage means?" Rebecca replied, "Isn't that when our soldiers go to war to fight for us?" Her dad said, "Well, yes. That is one kind of courage. But to do something that you are afraid to do is a different kind of courage."
Rebecca's mum reached over, holding her daughter's hand, and said, "If Sheila is really your friend, she will understand and still be your friend. Just do what you want to do."
