Each nose is special in its own way. However, according to a study done in 2013, the shape of your nose can show a number of things about your personality (性格). The researchers studied almost 1,700 pictures of people's noses and put them into 14 groups. They examined the nose shapes and posted their findings.

People with long noses have a strong wish to succeed in their professional (职业的) lives and are very diligent. They want things to be done perfectly and spend much time on their work. And they usually put their professional life first and their personal life second. People with shorter noses care about others and are true to friends. They value feelings more than anything else and they would rather be happy in their family than have a successful professional life. People with pointy (有尖头的) noses can give great advice on money. They usually use their money very wisely. Big nostrils (鼻孔) are a sign that someone likes to spend money rather than save it. And small nostrils show a strong belief that personal relationships and family are important.

      A . Their jobs. B . Their family. C . Their money. D . Their personal relationships.

A sense of humor (幽默) can bring happiness to family life, since laughing together is a way to connect. And a good sense of humor also can make kids cleverer, healthier and better able to deal with difficulties, because a good sense of humor is not just about telling jokes, but about the response (反应) to things in a creative and funny way. It means you can see things from different sides and in different way.

Most of us may think humor is like our black hair or big feet. We have it since we are born. But a sense of humor is a completely learned quality (品质) that can be developed in kids, not something they're born with.

Kids, especially young kids may not understand what humor is, but you can do something funny to make them laugh. For example, you can put on a stupid hat and run after a 3-year-old boy, or pretend (假装) to carelessly fall into a river to make a first-grader laugh. As kids grow up, these things may be boring. But you can share some jokes as their sense of what's funny grows better.

Kids with a well-developed sense of humor are happier. They have the ability to find what's amusing in others. They can also deal with differences (their own and others') well. Kids who can enjoy and share humor are better liked by their friends and more able to go through hard times in childhood—from moving to a new town, to going to a new school. A good sense of humor is a skill that kids can use in their whole life to help them enjoy the funny parts of life, and not take themselves too seriously.

    1. (1) What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A . What humor is. B . What is good about humor. C . How to reply to funny questions. D . How to develop a sense of humor.
    2. (2) What do most people think of the sense of humor?
A . It can be learned easily. B . It is a necessary life skill. C . It can grow as we get older. D . It is something we are born with.
    3. (3) What do kids with a sense of humor probably do?
A . Take themselves seriously. B . They can get used to a new school soon. C . They like moving from a place to another. D . They want to be different from their friends.

When we go to our beaches to enjoy Australia's sun and sand, we're continuously reminded of the need to wear a shirt, a hat and sunscreen (防晒霜). But we need also to pay attention to the resident birds that nest (筑巢) on our beaches and the migratory shorebirds (迁徙的滨鸟) that arrive every year from the north.

We have 18 kinds of resident shorebirds that spend all their lives in Australia, eating and breeding (繁殖) here on our beaches. But at least 37 other kinds move to Australia in spring and early summer. For most, a one-way trip from the north is some 10,000-13,000 km. Some of them are smaller than the adult human hand! After making the arduous journey here, migratory shorebirds increase in weight by eating the food on the beaches. These migratory birds are very sensitive (敏感的) to disturbance (干扰). Continual disturbance can stop them from finding enough food for their journey home. Some young birds and those that do not have the energy to make the return journey will stay here over winter.

Resident shorebirds face a number of different problems. Cats and dogs take adult birds as well as baby birds and eggs. Signs are often in place on the beaches to let people know of the presence of shorebirds, advising them to keep away from marked areas and to keep pets under control. Sadly, the advice is not always followed. Organizations and volunteers who find shorebird nests in open areas often place a cage (笼子) over the nest, which lets the birds come and go from the nest, but keeps larger animals out.

    1. (1) What can be learned about the shorebirds in Australia?
A . They are mostly from the south. B . They live in Australia all year along. C . There are 18 kinds of migratory shorebirds. D . There are more of them in spring than in winter.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word “arduous” mean?
      A . Hard. B . Safe. C . Successful. D . Impossible.
    3. (3) What can happen to birds as a result of disturbance?
A . They get lost. B . They get hungry. C . They get caught. D . They get cold.
    4. (4) Which of the following may be a sign mentioned in the last paragraph?
      A . B . C . D .

Kato Lomb was born at an exciting time. It was 1909 in Budapest, and the world that she grew up in was about to see great changes.

After getting her degree in chemistry, she saw little hope of getting a job in the scientific fields. So she decided to teach English. She just had to learn it first. In her language learning, Kato started reading cheap but exciting novels, carrying a dictionary with her all the time.

Her way of language learning made sense—if the story is exciting enough, it can keep you going past what you don't understand. In the end, you can pick up what you need from the context (上下文). The reading took her further than she could have imagined.

After the end of the Second World War, she began a long and successful career of interpretation (口译) and translation. In fact, she was one of the first professional simultaneous interpreters (专业同声传译) in the world. Simultaneous interpretation is a job much more difficult than translation as all the work happens in real time. Not stopping at English, she learned French, Russian, Polish, Chinese, Japanese and quite a few other languages that she used to work as a translator.

Kato believed that interest was the most important part of language leaning. Grammar could always come later if you were excited about learning and understanding new words in the language. No matter what language she was learning, she always believed she could complete the task and could keep studying her whole life.

    1. (1) Why did Kato Lomb decide to teach English? (No more than ten words)
    2. (2) Could Kato Lomb use many languages freely? (No more than three words)
    3. (3) In Kato's opinion, what was the best teacher in language learning? (No more than five words)
    4. (4) 请将文中画线的句子翻译成汉语。
    5. (5) 请给短文拟一个适当的英文题目。
