Have you ever made eye contact with a robot? It can be a very strange experience. Now, researchers have found that it is more than just a feeling. They ran an experiment that showed how a robot's gaze (凝视) can trick people into thinking they are socially interacting (互动) with a human being. That empiric can slow a person's ability to make decisions.

"Gaze is an important social signal that we employ on a day-to-day basis when interacting with others," said Professor Agnieszka Wykowska. She is the lead writer of a study on the research.

"The question is whether the robot gaze will cause very similar mechanisms (机制) in the human brain as another human's gaze would,"Wykowska said.

The team asked 40 people to play a video game of "chicken." In the game, each player has to decide whether to permit a car to drive straight toward another car or to turn to avoid a crash. The people were playing against a human-like robot sitting across from them.

During breaks in the game, players had to look at the robot. Sometimes the robot would look back and other times it would look away. As the interactions happened, the scientists collected information on behavior and brain activity.

"Our results show that, actually, the human brain regards the robot gaze as a social signal, and that signal has an effect on the way we're making decisions, on the strategies we use in the game and also on our replies,"Wykowska said.

"The gaze of the robot affected decisions, so humans were much slower in making the decisions in the game," she added.

The findings could be useful in helping to decide where and how human-like robots might be placed in the future.

    1. (1) How did the team carry out the experiment?
A . By looking at the robots in a video game. B . By communicating with human-like robots freely. C . By relying much on the strategies used in the game. D . By asking people to play a game with robots together.
    2. (2) What effect does the gaze of the robot have on players?
A . It makes them puzzled. B . It makes them reply slower. C . It changes the way they think. D . It affects their social behavior.
    3. (3) What advantage will the research bring about in the future?
A . Knowing where to put the human-like robots exactly. B . Deciding when to use the human-like robots. C . Improving people's learning skills. D . Being good at inventing robots.
    4. (4) Which of the following can be a best title for the text?
A . New Strategies We Use Can Beat Robots B . A Special Social Signal Affects People's Reply C . A Robot's Gaze Can Affect the Human Brain D . Human-like Robots Will Take the Place of People

Poor sleep has influences on employees' health and well-being, which can negatively affect an employer's bottom line. In fact, sleep deprivation increases the chances of workplace injuries by 70%

This is partially due to tired workers being less able to concentrate on workplace safety guidelines.

Employers can take easy, low-cost steps to make sure that their workers have the capability(能力) to sleep well and reduce the chances of workplace injuries.

Our approach focuses on improving supervisor (主管) support for employees' sleep. The majority of workplace training relies on employees to deal with their own sleep health. This is problematic, because many employees face challenges of improving their own sleep without outside support and education.

In February 2019, we published a study looking at the influence of a supervisor support training intervention(介入) on employees' sleep. Fifty-six study groups, made up of 791 employees in a Fortune 500 information technology firm, participated in the study.

Half of the study groups attended in-person group meetings to identify new ways to increase control over their own work schedules. The supervisors and managers in those same groups received additional in-person family-supportive supervisor training to improve their support for employees' family and non-work lives, and to promote the work-family balance.

Workers reported their time asleep, how rested they felt upon waking, and any inability they had to fall asleep. They also wore sleep tracking watches to measure their actual time spent sleeping each day. This study did not actually include a sleep training part. It focused solely on providing employees with more control over where and when they work. Besides, it taught their supervisors and managers to reduce demands, and better support employees' work-family balance.

We found that improving supervisors' support for employees' work-life balance can benefit employees' sleep in sustainable (可持续的) ways. In our study, both sleep quantity increased up to 18 months after the training. This study highlighted that an organization can keep supporting workers' work, family, health and well-being which can result in employees' reduced stress and improved sleep and job performance.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "deprivation" in Paragraph 1 mean?
      A . Loss. B . Habit. C . Environment. D . Schedule.
    2. (2) The study shows a good solution to poor sleep requires _________________.
      A . personal hard work B . outside intervention C . work schedule control D . in-person family support
    3. (3) What were the employees asked to do in the study?
A . Provide emotional support. B . Keep the work-family balance C . Join in extra sleep training. D . Tell their sleeping conditions.
    4. (4) What can we infer about the workers after the study?
A . They met with no sleep problems. B . They got a promotion in their position. C . They improved their life and work quality. D . They became more willing to work from home.

Some people are great at remembering faces. While, for some people, remembering face can be difficult. Even for others, it is much worse. Such people have a condition (call)"face blindness". Its actual name is DP, is short for Developmental Prosopagnosia.

Experts say DP can differ (great) from patient to patient. In less severe cases, people are unable to describe the face of someone they have just met. In severe cases, people cannot even recognize (they)own children in a group photo.

There would be no sign of it until you meet her a second time. She wouldn't remember you at all. Dacia has mostly recovered from her (injure). But now, she suffers from face blindness.

In the past, face blindness (think) to be very rare. But recent studies have shown that it might be more common experts thought. The study on face blindness will not directly lead any treatments(治疗). However, it may offer a much (deep) understanding of how we remember the world around us.
