Basel is often referred to as the cultural capital of Switzerland, but what exactly can you do in this Swiss city?
●The Rhein
In summer, it is common for locals and tourists alike to go for a refreshing swim in the river which runs through this beautiful city. When autumn and winter come along, swimming is replaced by walking along the river banks. I did see a very brave man take a dip in the dropping temperatures of late October, so anything is possible!
●The museums
Basel has a lot to offer in terms of museums, from the mechanical art in the Tinguely Museum to exploring the world of writing and printing in the Paper Museum, the skeletons of the Natural History Museum and discovering the city's past in the History Center.
●The Old Town
This city is still a beautiful place with a long history, lots of cute cobbled streets, a bright red town hall and a great cathedral. In contrast, the city is also proud of Switzerland's tallest building: the Roche tower.
●Go on a hike
If you're more of a nature fan. Basel-Landschaft has many beautiful hiking trails to choose from such as hills, forests and beautiful rivers. And of course you deserve a treat of Swiss chocolate afterwards!
●Eat
If you're in Switzerland, don't forget to let your tongue experience the bubbling cheese, toasty raclette and foamy drinks or chocolate kisses! You won't go hungry here. Of course, the rest of Switzerland also has much to offer, and thanks to great rail services, it can all be yours within an hour or two. Greetings from Basel! Hope to see you here soon.
One day while trying to print all the class worksheets we needed for the day, I found myself shouting at my printer in front of my son. "Why won't this stupid thing print?" I shouted. My son came up to me quietly, saying, "Calm down, Mommy. Maybe if you don't shout at the printer, it will work. You need to have patience."
He was right. I needed patience-patience with this whole situation. I stopped myself, realizing this was not the behavior I wanted my son to see. He was also right that I needed to calm down. Just like what I told him to do, I took a few deep breaths and walked away from the collapsed printer. Later that day when we were outside, I tried to keep the sense of calm I had slightly achieved. Once I blocked out all the anxiety over the virus, school, and my work-I found the afternoon peaceful and pleasant. I played flying disc with my son, simply enjoying each other's company while the birds sang. It was an everyday moment I'll never take for granted again.
From then on, things got a little easier. I started to give myself, and everyone else, some favour. I stopped holding myself to my perfectionism standards with every little thing because they were truly impossible to keep to.
With that favour, I changed my focus. Getting every school worksheet done correctly is not important. Neither is cleaning the house. And, apart from getting fired, neither is my work. Spending time with my family, and staying healthy emotionally and physically, became my main concerns. We took walks. We danced our hearts out during the Disney Family Sing-Along. We got up early and walked secretly into our backyard with telescopes to bird watch. Who knows, birding may be the new hobby we're never giving up.
The kakapo is the world's heaviest and only flightless parrot. Now, some scientists are using advanced technology to rescue the endangered kakapos. If successful, the techniques used may help save other bird species as well.
The few remaining kakapos live on three small islands, where their progress can be monitored through a smart device. Once found in large numbers across New Zealand, the cute bird, which can weigh up to 11 pounds (5 kilograms), is now heading to extinction. While cruel predators (捕食者) such as foxes, cats, and snakes are largely to blame, the kakapo's strange habits of laying eggs don't help either. For starters, the parrots, which can live up to 100 years, do not start laying eggs until the age of five.
Scientists have set up individual feeding stations for all the birds to keep track of how much they eat. Given the difficulties to increasing the population, it is not surprising that only 114 adult parrots remain. Though the number is low, it is a great improvement over the 51 kakapos that remained on Earth in 1995. The increase of its population results from the government's decision to remove the 51 birds to three small predator-free islands off the coast of New Zealand, and the efforts of a team led by Andrew Digby, a kakapo scientist for the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
A four-day-old kakapo chick will receive a health check. Young chicks in nests are examined and weighed every night, to ensure they are healthy.
Once the birds lay eggs, the eggs are carefully moved from the nests and taken to a hatching (孵化) room to hatch. "We tend to be more successful at raising kakapo eggs than the kakapo," says Digby. "We break less of them." Once the eggs hatch, each mother is given only one chick, while the rest of the newborns are hand-fed (人工喂养). This helps ensure they all receive enough food.
Today we will explore effective and ineffective ways to study for tests. You might learn that some study habits you used in the past might not be the best methods.
Rereading and highlighting (划重点) are common strategies that you will see in schools around the world. Students look at information they have already read in an effort to remember what is important. Students often combine (结合) rereading with highlighting. They underline important information in what they read.
Both rereading and highlighting are ineffective study tools. While better than not studying at all, they are not as useful as other habits. For example, with rereading, it's maybe not that effective because you are not trying to actively get the information back. With rereading, what is going to happen is that it is going to feel like you already know the information because you've already read it. So, you have this sense of fluency that is leading you to think “OK, yes, I know the information.”
The problem with highlighting is that students have a false sense of understanding-similar to when they reread information. Also, there is a second problem that comes with highlighting. Students aren't always aware of what the most important information is. So it's possible that they are maybe highlighting details that aren't as important as the higher level concepts.
So what should you do if rereading and highlighting are not the best ways to study for a test? One idea is to test yourself. Simple flashcards and practice exams can be helpful when you want to make sure that you have learned something.
Another strategy is to practice remembering the new information over time, instead of doing everything all at once. Regardless of which strategy you choose, you should know that effective learning takes time and it takes effort.
The next time you have a test coming, try to plan for the big day so that you can give yourself time to develop different study habits. And remember, rereading and highlighting are better than not studying at all, but there are better methods out there!
Push-ups (俯卧撑) are arguably the most classic move in fitness-and for good reason. For one thing, a no-equipment exercise means you can break into a workout no matter where you are. And if you're going to do just one move, push-ups are a good choice. Not bad for such a simple move!
But here's the thing: Push-ups aren't quite as simple as they seem. And if you want to get the result, it's key to get the form right. A proper push-up requires you to keep your back straight like a board, maintaining that form while you lower yourself to the floor. If you've been doing 20 push-ups at a time but your back is arched (拱形的), you're just working against yourself. And you won't get the results you're looking for. Bad form puts you at risk for injury.
It completely changes the mechanics (力学), and most people do it wrong with knees. Bad form can hurt your shoulders and back. Instead, keep your feet on the floor as usual, but place your hands on a raised surface, like a chair. Beginners should start with three sets of five, working slowly and concentrating on upper-body move. .
Once you've mastered three sets of ten, move to a lower surface, like a step platform. Again, aim for three sets of ten before moving on to your final goal: a standard floor push-up. When you get into full push-ups, you should see your arms getting more firm.
A. Push-ups improve your strength.
B. Most beginners like to practice knee push-ups.
C. You'll feel your arms getting more firm—that's the right result.
D. Mastering the full upper-body move is actually pretty advanced.
E. It's not something you should expect to do right from the beginning.
F. Not only do they work your arms, but they also work your chest and shoulders.
G. Even if you can only do five, you'll be noticeably stronger than when you started out.
I had to work as a substitute teacher (代课老师) before finding a full-time teaching job. One day, I 1my first substitute job at a school. The 2 said that I had to arrive at school at 8:00 am when I would sign in.

He said that even though that was what the email said, I 17 should have gotten to school before 8:00 am because that's what 18 people do, in case something unexpected might happen.
The headmaster's 19 had a strong influence on me, and then I 20 to become a smart person. Since then I have never been late for school.
