I am a book lover. So my house is forever full of1. I have new ones, old ones, hardcovers, paperbacks,2and non-stories. I have three boxes of books in my closet, two boxes of books on the floor of my bedroom, and a box of children's books 3for my future grandchildren. I have even more books4the two I wrote, on my desk. I try to keep the books5building up by donating as many as I can to the local6, but as soon as I donate a few, I find myself buying a few more.
Books I read keep my mind young, my heart 7, and my soul bright. They bring me knowledge, laughter, and joy. They connect me with the wisdom(智慧) of the past and the new ideas of the8. They keep me moving on the right path as I journey through life.
I have learned that people are a lot like books as well. Some have bright and shiny(有光泽的) covers 9don't have very much to say in side of them.10look old and plain but so full of wisdom and light that reading them can11your whole life. One difference between books and people, though, is that while a book has an ending, the writing inside of us12forever.
Take care when writing the book of your own life. Fill it with love for yourself, others, and this world. Fill it with all the wisdom you have learned, goodness you have done,13you have shared, and joy you have 14. Keep writing it every day, too. Make it everything you are and everything you want to be, and then open it to 15. I know it will be a wonderful and fantastic book.

A teacher began his class by holding up a glass of water. He asked the students, "How much do you think this glass weighs?"
"Fifty grams(克)!" "One hundred grams!" "One hundred and fifty grams!" The students answered. The students took great interest in guessing.
"I don't know either." said the teacher. "What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?" "Nothing," the students said.
"OK. What would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?" "Your arm would ache," said a student.
"You're right. Now what would happen if I held it for a day?" "Your arm would go numb(麻木的). You may have to go to hospital!" said another student, and all the students laughed.
"Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?" asked the teacher. "No." "Then what caused the pain and numbness?" The students were confused.
"What should I do now to get rid of the pain?" asked the teacher again. "Put the glass down!" said a student.
"Exactly!" said the teacher. "Life's problems are something like this. Hold them for a few minutes in your head and they seem OK. Think of them for a long time and they begin to ache. Hold them even longer and they begin to make you numb. You will not be able to do anything."
The students learned a truly important lesson. It's important to think of the worries or problems in your life. But what's even more important is to "put them down" at the end of every day.
"All right then-just one more piece..." Words every girl has said when they are faced with the delicious cheesecake. Of course, many of us know we may eat the whole thing in the end.
It isn't just girls. Most of us find it hard to say "no" to something attractive. However, scientists now say that willpower(意志力) is very important for success and a happy life. Scientists in different countries have been studying the influence of willpower on people's lives for a long time. In one experiment(实验), scientists told young children that they could either have a candy now, or two candies in 15 minutes. Waiting of course needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower influenced their lives.
Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two candies were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely, the children who had shown weaker willpower at that young age were more likely(可能) to be in low-paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems.
But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理学) expert told us that we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles(肌肉). You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in complete sentences, or using a computer mouse with the other hand. Of course, don't try to do too many things at the same time, or when you don't have enough energy, for example, when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢复) your willpower with a good night's sleep and by eating well.
One day in a restaurant, the American writer Anne Herbert wrote this sentence on a piece of paper: "Random actions of kindness." Later she repeated it in an interview on a TV show, and it soon caught people's eye and made people think about how small "kind" actions could make our daily lives better.
One rainy night, a woman was standing at a bus stop waiting for the bus. A man came by on a motorcycle and offered to give her a ride. Of course, the woman said no. It would be crazy to accept a ride from a stranger on a motorcycle. Suddenly the man reached out and put a 50-dollar bill in her hand. He said, "Please take a taxi. It hurts me to see you standing here in the rain. " Before she could refuse, he left quickly on his motorcycle.
Kind actions can be contagious. Once, a woman was going through a toll station on a highway. Instead of paying for one ticket, she asked for two. She said to the toll collector, "The second ticket is for the car behind me." She didn't know the person in that car. She just did it without thinking more. So when the next car came up, the toll collector said to the driver, "You don't have to pay. The woman in the blue car just paid for you." The driver was so surprised that he decided to pay for the person behind him. This continued with14 drivers that day. So just imagine what the world will be like if we all practice random actions of kindness from time to time.
English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages. Immigrants(移民者) coming into the United States have contributed many words to the language, which have kept their original pronunciation. "Coolie" and "kowtow" were taken from the Chinese language, "kamikaze" from the Japanese, "shampoo" from India, "blitz" from German, "amigo" and "Los Angeles" from Spanish and so on.
Many students have studied English for years, some as many as eight. However, some students still have difficulty in speaking fluent English. Some know many words but are unable to discern them when native speakers use them. In our oral English classes we will focus on speaking and listening to native English speakers. For this reason, because we are trying to train your ears to hear English and your mouths to speak intelligible(可理解的) English, we will have a rule that only English will be spoken in our English classes. Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine(罚款) in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English. If teachers enter a classroom and discover that anyone is speaking Chinese, they will require everyone in the room to pay the fine. It is everyone's job to follow the English-Only rule. It is for your benefit. It is because we want to accustom your ears to hearing English.
Other subjects may be learned only from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to speak it! Students are often nervous about speaking in class at first but we hope to make the class fun, so you will forget your nervousness and learn to speak out. Enjoy your classes.

Tom was (出生)with a strange disease. He was taken to many hospitals. None of the doctors knew the (起因) of the disease. They told his parents he would go blind and (聋的).
Now Tom is fourteen. His eyesight and hearing are so poor that he can't see or hear (清晰地). But he is a (明亮的) and happy boy. He says to himself, " (无论什么) happens, I will never give up." With his parents' help, he is travelling as much as he can. He is also sharing the interesting things he (经历) along the way.
