It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can't fix the damage. Sometimes, they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.

Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.

Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain's temperature was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like what they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.

Can ducks help solve the problem of locust (蝗虫)? That is a question being asked in Southern Asia? Like the region of East Africa, the nation of Pakistan is trying to keep masses of locusts from eating the country's crops.

But while the insect invasion in Africa has been blamed on weather, experts say the one in Pakistan is a side effect of a civil war in the Middle Eastern country of Yemen. Because of that war, officials haven't been able to do enough pest control to keep Yemen's locust population from growing, so the insects obviously multiplied and made their way north east eventually landing on Pakistan.

Locusts don't directly attack people. They threaten us by eating our crops. And so many of these insects in such large numbers can destroy regional food supplies. That's why Pakistan declared (宣布) a state of emergency early this month, saying it was dealing with the highest number of locusts in more than 20 years. So what can be done about it? Some experts say pesticides are needed to kill masses of these insects, but there's another idea being considered in China. It may send ducks to Pakistan --as many as 100,000 of them-- to fight the locusts by eating them. An expert interviewed by the Bloomberg media company says one duck can eat more than 200 locusts per day, and China has reportedly used ducks to successfully solve a locust problem in the past. But not everyone is on board with this. A member of China's delegation (代表团) to Pakistan says there's not enough water in Pakistan's hot dry climate to keep the ducks going. Whatever methods are used to control locusts in Asia the situation in Africa is getting more hopeless by the day.

    1. (1) According to the paragraph 2, what caused the locust outbreak in Pakistan?
A . There are no natural enemies to eat locusts. B . The civil war of Yemen affected pest control. C . The government of Yemen didn't do any pest control. D . The weather in Pakistan caused the increase of locusts.
    2. (2) What harmful effect will masses of locusts bring about?
A . Destroying crops. B . Changing the weather. C . Tensing international relations. D . Directly threatening human security.
    3. (3) Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase in paragraph 3?
      A . Asks for B . Relys on C . Agrees on D . Thinks about

For five days, Edmonton's Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Since its beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating the true feeling of what folk music is all about and that's the traditional togetherness (友爱) that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through songs.

This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. "People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation," Riedel said. "It's really easy to relax, and it's great seeing family and friends have fun together." These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.

With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue (举办地) for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.

The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it's easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug. 4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug. 8.

    1. (1) The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is held mainly to _______.
A . gather people with different musical tastes B . remind people of the real sense of folk music C . exhibit the good voices of great talents in folk music D . collect old stories of folk music
    2. (2) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . Riedel has volunteered for the festival for at least 5 years. B . It's hard for people to appreciate Blues. C . It costs people a little to fill up their cups from water stations. D . People have to pay $2 for a plate of food.
    3. (3) We can learn from the passage that _______.
A . people can get tickets easily for the festival B . the Edmonton Folk Music Festival is well organized C . driving one's own car to the festival is highly recommended D . bikes are available at the festival from Wednesday to Sunday

    Avoid Internet Addiction

Many people suffer from addiction to the Internet and have a hard time paying attention to the important things around them. How can we prevent ourselves from going online too much?

Admit you have an addiction.  Realize more and more people in the world are becoming addicted. You are not the only one with this problem. Do not be embarrassed; find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Limit your computer time. Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock and make sure that you get off the computer when the time is up.  Try using the computer at the library.          Go for a run with a friend or get exercise some other way. Keep up with the local events in your neighborhood. There may be talks, films, concerts and sports events, etc. Find some, as long as it is not on the Internet, and get involved.

My grandfather was a house(paint). Once, when in college, I helped Grandpa paint a house. While working inside, I noticed he was very skilled at giving a wall a quality coat of paint so quickly. fact, during the time that he was painting, he could carry on a conversation with the home owner,  (laugh) all the time.

At one point, he stopped to watch me. He noticed how I  (dip) the brush in the paint bucket(桶) and how I carefully wiped off both sides of the brush as I pulled it out not to waste any paint. Then I spread the thin coat of paint on the wall without spilling(溢出)a drop. It was a long, (bore) process, but I dared not laugh or have a kidding for fear of makingmess. Finally, he gave me some(suggest). "Here, watch this," he said, as he took the brush from my hand. "See, this is how you did it. Don't worry about spills and messes. They can always(clean) up. Treat a wall like you treat people. Be generous and have fun. Always put together paint on the brush." Yes, he did spill a few drops, but I noticed his wall looked much (good) than mine. I also noticed he was having great fun.

Life is not always perfect. Some days, we spill few drops; some days, we spill a lot. The only thing that really matters is the wall looks like when we are done and how much fun we have painting it.

六、书面表达(共一节,满分25分)
  • 8. (2020高一下·丽水期中) 阅读下面,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Christine closed the door to Anna's room. Inside, her classmate and friend had fallen asleep.

Downstairs, Christine's mom, Donna, was grasping Anna's mother Sheila around the shoulders.

"We should go," she said. "Get some rest, huh?" Sheila nodded, blew her nose, and then waved them goodbye.

On the car ride home, Christine worked up the courage to ask the question on her mind. "Mom? Why was Sheila weeping?" She thought she knew the answer, of course: Anna's cancer. In the past, Anna had been the neighborhood do-gooder, always going door to door for various causes: the local animal shelter, suffering children in Africa, or the families who'd lost their homes to fire. Now Anna could barely feed or dress herself. Christine thought it so unfair when bad things like this happened to good people.

"Well, it's complex, but I guess you're old enough to understand."

        "Understand what?"

"Understand that Anna is sick, yes, but Anna actually gets a lot of help. The government helps pay for a lot of her medicine. She gets meals delivered to her by a nonprofit. She even gets massages from local volunteers."

        "Wow!"

"Her life's still very hard, of course, and no one would trade places with her, but when you have cancer, everyone can see that you need help, "continued Donna." They don't always see that the people around you are suffering."

        "People like Sheila?"

"Yes, did you know that Sheila took a break from her job to stay home with Anna?"

"No!" Christine was surprised. She had never thought about who took Anna to her appointments, or fed her when she was too weak to lift a spoon. Of course it was her family.

"Yes. So that means that many of the things they used to do with that extra money are all out the window now. They're even worried now about keeping the house."

"Their house? So Anna might have to move, while she's sick?"

"If she doesn't get better soon, and the bills keep piling up..." Donna pulled into the driveway, and just in time. Her cheeks were shining with tears.

    注意:
