"Fire! Fire!" What terrible words to hear when one woke up in a strange house in the middle of the night! It was an old house and my room was on the top floor. I jumped out of bed, opened the door and ran out of the room. There was1of thick smoke.
I began to run, but as I was still only half-awake, instead of going2the stairs I went in the opposite direction. The smoke3thicker and I could see fire all around. The floor became hot under my feet. I found an open door and ran into a room to get to the window. But before I could4it, one of my feet caught in something soft and I fell down. The thing I had fallen over felt like a bundle (捆) of clothes, and I picked it up to5my face from the smoke and heat. Just then the floor gave6under me and I ran to the floor below with pieces of burning wood all around me.
I saw a doorway in7, then I put the bundle over my face and ran. My feet burned me 8, but I got through. As I reached the cold air outside, my bundle of clothes gave a thin cry, I nearly dropped it in my9. Then I was in a crowd gathered in the street. A woman in a night-dress and a borrowed man's coat screamed as she saw me and came running10.
She was the Mayor's wife, and I had saved her baby.

Are you worried about going to senior high school? We've put together a guide on how to do on the first week.
You're not alone
Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat, you may not realize it, but they're just as nervous as you are. Moving to senior high school is a chance, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help!
If you're not sure what to do, you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they're experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a "friends system". If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look after you and help you.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You'll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you have an older brother or sister at the school, ask them for advice.
Be yourself! People will know you much better if you just act naturally.
Go to bed early and you'll find it easier to get up in the morning!
A famous scientist told us why he was able to be more creative than the ordinary person.
He said that it came from an experience with his mother that happened when he was about two years old. He was trying to move a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost the bottle and it fell on the floor and broken. When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him, she said, "Robert, what a great mess you have made! I have seldom seen so much milk on the floor. Well, the accident has already been done. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?"
He did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up and manage everything to its proper order at last. So, how would you like to do that?" He cleaned up the milk with his mother.
His mother then said, "You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to successfully carry a big milk bottle with two small hands. Let's go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it." The little boy learned that if he caught the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson! This famous scientist then said that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just chances for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about.
Once there was an 11-year-old boy who went fishing with his father in the lake. On the day before bass (巴斯鱼) season opened. While they were waiting by the lake, suddenly he felt that something very big pulling on the lure (鱼饵). The boy tried to brought the fish beside the bank. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father looked at his watch. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. "You'll have to put it back," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy, "There will be other fish," said his father. "Not as big as this one," cried the boy. He looked around the lake. He looked again at his father.
Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the fish, the boy could tell from his father's voice that the decision couldn't be changed. The big fish disappeared. The boy thought that he would never again see such a big fish.
From then on, he has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish… again and again… every time he has an ethical (伦理的，道德的) decision to make. For, as his father had taught him, ethics (道德标准) are simple matters of right and wrong.
