Mary Krupa became friends with the grey squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them running around and idly (漫无目的地) wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the "Squirrel Girl".

Mary started bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift up their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Mary and her squirrels became an Internet hit.

Growing up in a neighborhood outside State College, Mary was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn't interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. "The squirrels are actually a good way to break the ice, because I'll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and we'll just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them," she said. "I am a lot more outgoing."

And in case you're wondering how Mary is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they'll grab it. But getting to that part took a while. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though.

This year, Mary is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Mary plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.

    1. (1) What kind of change do squirrels bring to Mary?
A . She is sicker than before. B . She is more interested in animals. C . She is more sociable than before. D . She is less willing to go to college.
    2. (2) How did Mary manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?
A . By putting them in cages. B . By playing music to them. C . By attracting them with colorful food. D . By building a close relationship with them.
    3. (3) Which words can best describe Mary?
      A . Patient and caring. B . Confident and strong. C . Sociable and healthy. D . Traditional and hard-working.
    4. (4) What can be the best title for the text?
A . Mary's experience in university B . Making friends with wild animals C . The “Squirrel Girl” of Penn State D . The bridge between Mary and squirrels

A small family approached. The daughter was young and pretty. Her name was Blair, and she was obviously leaving. Her parents were not. The three gazed at the crowd and began their wait. Blair was twenty-three, fresh from graduate school with a handsome resume (简历) but not ready for a career. A friend from college was in Africa as a volunteer for Peace Work, which had inspired Blair to devote the next two years to helping others. Her assignment was in eastern Peru, where she would teach primitive little children how to read. She would live in a hut with no modern conveniences, no electricity, no phone, and she was anxious to begin her journey.

The flight would take her to Miami, then to Lima, then by bus for three days into the mountains, into another century. For the first time in her young and sheltered life, Blair would spend Christmas away from home.

Luther, her father, was sad that Blair was leaving. The goodbyes had all been said. "Are you sure this is what you want?" had been asked for the hundredth time. Then, the first announcement was made, the one asking those in first class to come forward.

"I guess we'd better go," Luther said to his daughter, his only child. They hugged again and fought back the tears. Blair smiled and said, "The year will fly by. I'll be home next Christmas."

Nora, her mother, bit her lip and nodded and kissed her once more. "Please be careful," she said because she couldn't stop saying it.

    "I'll be fine."

They released her and watched helplessly as she joined a long line and inched away, away from them, away from home and security and everything she'd ever known. They turned and got into endless sadness.

A news release is a tool of communication, through which information is passed to even the farthest end of the world. It keeps us well informed of the happenings of the world which would otherwise remain unknown.

When writing a news release, keep in mind that the media receive hundreds of releases every day. Try to follow these guidelines: Keep it short and professional. Come up with a catchy headline that will grasp someone's attention. Sometimes the title will take more time to come up with than writing the release. That's okay — the headline could be critical for getting an event covered!

Cover the 5 W's in your first paragraph. Those are who you are; what you are doing; where; when you are doing; why you are doing it, which help us understand the details about the event. Besides, any opinions in the news release should be put in quotations from your designated spokesperson. Include things that the media finds newsworthy, which is the most essential.

Make the time on your news release at least a half hour later than the time you have told activists to show up at an event. This will ensure that activists are prepared and in place by the time the media arrive.

Choose a spokesperson for the event who can be quoted in the release and will be available for calls at that number the day before the event.

Have someone proof the release for spelling, grammar and content (determine whether what you are trying to relay is clear and right). Sometimes the person who writes the release may not notice mistakes that a fresh pair of eyes will catch.

Accuracy is the last but not the least important in terms of your content and the location and time that you tell the media. If you do make a mistake, it is critical that you call and notify the media of the correction.

    1. (1) What's the main purpose of the passage?
A . To tell us the importance of the news release. B . To tell us how to avoid mistakes in the news release. C . To make us know how to make the news release. D . To ask us to read the news release on the latest events
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "catchy" in Para. 2 probably mean?
      A . tricky B . attractive C . imaginary D . funny
    3. (3) What is the most important for a news release according to the passage?
A . Make sure the 5 W's in your first paragraph. B . Choose a proper spokesperson for the event. C . Make the news release newsworthy and accurate. D . Ensure activists prepared for the events in advance.
    4. (4) Why do we have someone proof the release?
A . Because they can write good articles. B . Because they are expert in mistakes. C . Because they can help polish the news. D . Because they know the events correctly.

  • 15. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As a child grows up, you may wonder how you can teach him to become a respectful adult. A child who learns to respect not only learns to receive respect from others, but also learns to respect himself.

    ◆Show him respect.

This is the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child attentively and he will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in communication.

The more you say "please" and "thank you" to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

    ◆Agree to disagree

Explain your decision so that he will understand you and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you doesn't necessarily mean disobedience.

◆Control your impulse (冲动) to overreact.

When a situation arises, stay calm and keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior.

    ◆Praise, praise, praise!

So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that his accomplishments are not celebrated enough.

    A. Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

    B. Respectful behavior is always accompanied by bad behavior as a child.

    C. Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

    D. If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

    E. A child may act as he pleases and he will live a happy life.

    F. Seeing a child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows how proud you are of him.
