Most of the universe is made up of a kind of matter. It's called "dark matter". None of us have ever seen it, and It's also very difficult to study.

Past research suggested there is more dark matter around younger galaxies (星系) than the ancient ones from the early days of the universe, but where did the dark mater come from? After studying some 1,500 galaxies, researchers led by Alfred Riley found the amount of dark matter around these huge stars and planets is about the same as it ever was.

We can't see dark matter in space because it doesn't reflect (反射) light, but we can study it by studying the influence the matter has on all around it. It gives a pull, just like "normal" matter.

By explaining the size of a galaxy and the speed at which stars on its edges (边缘) are moving, scientists can learn how much dark matter is around it.

Recently, scientists use the same way to study many hundred galaxies, both young and old.

They believe there's not much of a difference in the amount of dark mater between ancient galaxies and much younger ones.

However, not all of them fully agree with this new finding. The model researchers used has been called into question, especially as it relates to measurements (测量) of faraway high-mass (高质量的) galaxies which have been studied by others searching for dark matter.

Well have to wait and see how this all goes, but the results are certainly interesting and will no doubt further the conversation about where the universe's dark mater lies.

    1. (1) What is most of the universe made up of?
      A . Dark matter. B . Bright stars. C . Young galaxies. D . Huge planets.

    3. (3) What does the underlined word "it" in the fourth paragraph refer to?
      A . The planet. B . The galaxy. C . The matter. D . The universe.
    4. (4) Which of the following is TRUE about dark mater around younger or ancient galaxies?
A . There is more dark matter around young galaxies. B . There is more dark matter around ancient galaxies. C . The amount of dark matter around them is almost the same. D . So far, there is still much to discuss about it.
    5. (5) What would be the best title for this passage?
A . The Magic Universe B . New Findings in Space C . The Secret of Nature D . Searching for Dark Matter

Over 30 percent of all food produced goes to waste, according to The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (联合国粮农组织). Supermarkets throw away food that is not sold before its sell-by date, while families throw away food that they can't finish eating. To stop food waste, some people have come up with great ideas. Take a look for yourself.

        Food bank

The world's fist food bank was created in the US in 1967. The bank took donation s(捐赠) of food from people and stores that had extra food. People could then go to the food bank and take the food home if they could not afford to buy any for themselves. In Shanghai, there is a "shared fridge" in some communities. It stores (储存) food that is donated by nearby markets and restaurants. It s free for anyone to take.

        Pay as you like

A UK company called The Real Junk Food Project says that food that has passed is sell-by date is still safe to eat. They collect this food from supermarkets and sell it in cafes. You only have to pay as much as you feel is necessary.

If you don't want to spend money, you can volunteer at the cafes instead. There are now 125 Real Junk Food cafes worldwide. And the number is growing quickly.

        Buy less

What else can we do to stop food waste? The answer is simply buying less food. There are millions of people around the world who still don't have enough to eat. We should be more careful about how we shop for food.
