Much meaning can be carried clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

Do you have such kind of experience? On a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he finds that he is being looked at, he may feel uncomfortable. It is the same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than

necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is something wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward the person who is looking at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be impolite. But sometimes things are different. If a man looks at a woman for more than 10 seconds, it may mean that he wishes to attract (吸引) her attention and to make her understand that he loves her. When two people are in a conversation, the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does attention to what he or she is speaking. Lovers will enjoy looking at each other or being looked at for a long time to show something that minds cannot express.

Clearly, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the place where you stay.

    1. (1) If you look at a stranger for too long, what will he feel?
      A . Comfortable. B . Happy. C . Attractive. D . Uncomfortable.

A . He expresses his anger with her. B . He minds her bad behaviour. C . He wishes to attract her. D . Maybe they have known each other before.
    3. (3) Why does the speaker look at the listener from time to time during the talk?
A . To make sure the listener does notice what he or she is speaking. B . To show something that minds cannot express. C . To make sure if there is something wrong with the talk. D . To make the listener think his or her speaking is very good.
    4. (4) What does the writer think of looking at someone?
A . Being impolite. B . Being annoying. C . A good way of communication. D . In different places it has different meanings.
