Professor Martin's report says that children who attend a number of schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally affected.

The professor says, "It's true, my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. Our feelings are based on research and not on any personal feeling that I or many assistants may have on the subject."

Captain Thomas James, an army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, "I've never heard such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children who change school regularly—if they keep to the same system, as in our Army school. In my experience—and I've known quite a few of them—Army children are as well-adjusted (适应) as any others, if not better. What the professor doesn't appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt (适应) much better than grown-ups."

When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time has his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency (倾向).

"Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority (大多数) of children suffer from constantly (不断地) having to enter a new learning situation."

    1. (1) Professor Martin's report suggests that ________.
A . it may not be good for children to change schools too often B . parents should not move around the country C . children are now making slow progress D . more and more children are mentally affected
    2. (2) According to the passage, Professor Martin's personal feeling ________.
A . is opposite of what his report has shown B . is in a way supported by his research C . has played a big part in his research D . is based on his own experience as a child
    3. (3) From the passage, we can conclude that Captain James's children ________.
A . have been affected by changing schools B . go to ordinary state schools C . can get used to the Army school education D . discuss their education regularly with their father
    4. (4) According to Professor Martin, ________ suffer from changing schools regularly.
      A . army children B . quite a few children C . bright children D . few children

Knowing a little first aid could be life-saving if you see someone lying unconscious.

Too often people don't do anything because they think they will kill the patient, but by learning simple rules you could make the difference between life and death.

First, you need to find out if they're unconscious, asleep or drunk, by squeezing the skin between their neck and shoulder and shouting. If there is no response at all, you need to establish if they are dead or just unconscious—sometimes it's very difficult to tell the difference.

Open the airway by placing one hand on their forehead and gently tilting the head back while lifting the chin.

If there are no signs of life—no obvious pulse and their chest is not going up and down—call an ambulance and then start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (心脏复苏) to maintain (获得) a flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart.

Do this by pushing up and down on the centre of the chest, with your hands interlocked together, constantly until an ambulance arrives.

Push at a rate of 100 beats a minute. You can't harm them doing this and might just save a life.

    1. (1) People don't do first aid often because ________.
      A . they are not doctors B . they think it is dangerous C . it isn't their responsibility D . they are cold-hearted
    2. (2) How can you tell whether the person is dead or just asleep?
A . By squeezing the skin on the arm. B . By tilting the head back. C . By placing one hand on their forehead. D . By shouting to the person.
    3. (3) If the person's chest is not going up and down, it shows ________.
A . the person is dead B . first aid is not needed C . you should start CPR D . an ambulance isn't necessary
    4. (4) What is the main idea of the passage?
A . First aid for drunk people. B . First aid for injured people. C . First aid for unconscious people. D . First aid for choked people.
  • 9. 阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

"Depend on yourself" is what nature says to everyone. Parents can help you. Teachers can help you. Others can help you. But all these only help you to help yourself.

There have been many great men in history. But many of them were poor in childhood, and had no uncles, aunts or friends to help them. Schools were few and not very good. They could not depend on them for education. They saw how it was, and set to work with all their strength to know something. They worked their own way till they became wellknown.

One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, "I can not make worthy men of you, but I can help you make men of yourselves."

Some young men do not try their best to make themselves valuable to the human beings. They can never gain achievements unless they see their weakpoints and change their courses. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers, and depend on their own honest efforts.

    1. (1) Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A . How to Be Famous B . What Nature Says to Everyone C . Depend on Yourself D . Men Must Help Each Other
    2. (2) Many of the great men in history succeeded because ________.
A . they were very poor in childhood B . they wanted very much to become famous C . they made great efforts to learn and work D . they could not depend on schools for education
    3. (3) From this article we can learn that the writer ________.
A . is a man of strong character B . sings high praise for parents C . thinks highly of those men struggling by their own efforts D . feels it is the most important of all to accept the advice of others
三、任务型阅读
  • 10. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    A. There are many methods that might help you with your studying.

    B. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

    C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

    D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

    E. Maybe you are an average student.

    F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

    G. This will help you understand the next class.

You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First set your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying . A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day and read that material. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be over worried.

. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
