The Germans published the first modern-style newspaper in 1609. News-sheets existed before then, but these were not really newspapers.
Hundreds of years later, people are still buying newspapers. Shops and stalls all over the world millions of newspapers every day.
However, people do not get their news only from newspapers. They can listen to it, as they did long ago, and they can it.
Two inventions, radio and television, have made this . These broadcast many news programmes daily. So people now get news from their radios and TV sets, from papers.
However, newspapers remain because they give the news in more detail than either radio or TV. That is the main reason people continue to buy them.
For years I wanted a flower garden. I'd spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew, and Marvin, and the twins, Alisa, and Alan, and then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight (拮据的), as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say, "Do you see a money tree in the yard?Money doesn't grow on trees, you know."
Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Then, one spring morning, on Mother's Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow (垂柳), because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on — and I couldn't believe what I saw.
There was a money tree in my yard!
I went to have a look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note among them, "Thank you for your time, Mom. We love you."
Later, my children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden's now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they're right there with me.
I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers, I'll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes— every time.
I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!
Nowadays school students' health becomes weaker. It is found that they 1pay much attention to sports. Is it because they have no interest in sports? Certainly not. Teenagers live very busy study lives now and often forget to think about sports.
Every week, they have to 2 themselves for all kinds of examinations and tests in school. Test scores have become the focus of their life. Parents pay high attention to their test results. Because of the pressure (压力) from their parents and teachers, they 3 to work harder and spend most of their time on books. So many of them almost become bookworms. Books have kept them from sports. As for the students themselves, they want to get good results 4they can have a good future. So they spend all of their spare time studying for improvement and 5 school sports.
However, it is important to take a correct attitude about study. A quick mind rarely goes along with a weak body. 6 a strong body, you can never achieve anything. Sports give us valuable practice in helping the eyes, brain and muscles work together. Such kind of practice is especially useful for the students who work with their brains too long.
A group of frogs were traveling through the woods when two of them fell into a deep pit(坑). All the other frogs came around the pit. When they saw how d the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were dying. The two frogs wouldn't listen to their words and tried to jump out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop. F, one of the frogs listened to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. Th other frog c to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the group of frogs shouted at him to give up and wait for the d. He jumped even harder and in the end he made it out. When he got out, the other frog asked: "Did you not hear us?" To their surprise, the frog explained to them that he couldn't hear clearly. He thought they were encouraging him the w time.
Words have the power of life and death. An encouraging word spoken to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it t their difficulties. A destructive word to someone who is down can sometimes kill that person. So always be careful of what you say.
