That warm day was the only day of the week without rain. I opened the door, took a seat and began to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Suddenly, I noticed that the house near mine had been sold. An elderly lady was in front of the door, with some beautiful flowers beside her. I walked to her. She looked to be in her early eighties and had the prettiest white hair.

"Hi! My name is Karmen," I said smiling brightly at the old lady. She smiled back and said. "Hello, Karmen. I'm Henrietta." Her voice was very strong for someone at her age. Later, I learnt she was alone and had no family or relatives to help her. From that day on, I often visited her and helped her with her housework and sometimes she gave me some delicious food. A year passed, and I considered Henrietta to be one of my best friends.

One day, I walked over for my morning visit and knocked on the door, but there was no answer. I knocked again, and she still didn't turn up. So I let myself in, using the key she had given me. I checked her living room and then her kitchen. I finally went into her bedroom, and she was lying peacefully on her bed. Beside her there were two notes. One was her will, which said all that she had would be given to me. The other was a thank-you note. I went to her bedside and cried sadly.

Though several years have gone by, I still miss her deeply. Whenever I look at the beautiful flowers in front of her house. I remember the wonderful friendship we had.

Recently a report showed that children in Beijing get less sleep than those in other parts of the country, putting them at a higher risk of physical and mental health problems.

People in Beijing usually sleep 7.6 hours a night, but about 25 per cent of the city population usually doesn't get enough sleep, according to the report by the capital's Health and Family Planning Centre. At least 30 per cent sleep fewer than 6.5 hours a night, the report said. Especially children living in the capital get less sleep than their peers elsewhere because of the large amounts of homework, excessive (过度的) use of mobile phones and poor sleeping patterns. Primary school student Li Li said she went to bed each day around midnight after finishing her homework and playing mobile games for a few hours. "I play online games together with many of my classmates after we finish our studies," the 10-year-old girl said. "It's a way of relaxing after studying all day. My parents also play mobile games after dinner."

Health experts have warned that long-term sleep problems can increase the risk of heart disease, anxiety (焦虑) and depression. According to the American Sleep Association, deep sleep gives the brain time to rest itself from daily activities, and it is important for health.

Homework is your teachers' way of knowing how much you understand of what's going on in class. But it seems there is quite a lot of homework sometimes. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

    Make a Homework Plan

Make sure you know exactly what to do. Write it down in your notebook.

Start right away. Just because it's called "homework" doesn't mean you have to do it at home. Use breaks between classes or lunch break in your school day. The more you get done in school, the less you have to do at night.

Plan your time. It's very important especially when you have a lot of homework or activities.

    Choose Where You Work

Where do you do your homework? In the living room with the TV on? In the bedroom with the computer on? You should find a place away from noise or distraction, like a bedroom or a study without any TV, computer or cellphone. Find a comfortable table or desk to sit at. Don't study on your bed.

    Get to Work

Deal with the hardest work first. You have the most energy and focus when you begin. Later, when you're tired, you can do simpler things.

Keep moving ahead. Don't spend too much time on a difficult problem because this can mess up your homework plan. If you need to, ask your parents or a classmate for help.

Take breaks. You can't focus well if you're tired. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

    Get It Ready to Go

When your homework is done, put it in your school bag. There's nothing worse than having a completed assignment (作业) that you can't find the next morning.

    1. (1) Which of the following is the best place to do homework?
      A . A sofa in the living room. B . A bed in the bedroom. C . A desk with a computer in the bedroom. D . A table in the study.
    2. (2) When you get to do your homework, the first thing to do is to _______.
A . work out the most difficult problem B . ask parents or classmates for help C . take a rest for 15 minutes D . do the simplest thing
    3. (3) According to the passage, when you meet with difficulties while doing homework, you can _______.
A . spend much time thinking about them until you work them out B . ask for help when you're sure you can't work them out C . ask your teacher for help instead of your classmates D . put the homework in the school bag and then go to bed
    4. (4) The passage is mainly about _______.
A . how to plan time for homework B . how to choose a best place to do homework C . how to make homework less work D . why we should ask for help with our homework
  • 25. 阅读下面短文,从下面每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Today I'll talk about the invention of the camera and photography (摄影). The camera is often thought to be a modem invention, but as early as 1727, a German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt. Used as a camera, a big box was set up, and a small hole was cut in one side to let the light in. he made temporary pictures on the silver salt. Silver salt is still the base of the photographic film today. Then a French scientist named Joseph made the first permanent (永久的) picture by using a special piece of metal which was covered with silver salt. A photo he made in 1826 still exists.

The painter De Gear improved the method by covering the metal also with placing the common salt which we can eat. This was in 1839, the official date of the beginning of photography. But the problem was the printing of the photos. And it wasn't until other scientists developed the kind of photographic paper that good prints were possible and photography became truly modem. In the 1870s, Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War. In the 20s of this century, Dr Edward Lane invented the so-called "Instant Camera" which uses self-developing film. If we say photography came into being in 1839, it follows that it took more than 100 years for the camera to reach its present condition.

    1. (1) The underlined word "temporary" in Paragraph 1 means "_______" in Chinese.
      A . 黑暗的 B . 短暂的 C . 突然的 D . 美丽的
    2. (2) How was the first permanent picture made?
A . By making use of special paper. B . By adding common salt to silver salt. C . By giving a slight colour to the silver salt. D . By using a special piece of metal.
    3. (3) The official date of the beginning of photography is _______.
      A . 1727 B . 1826 C . 1839 D . 1870
    4. (4) Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A . The camera is a modern invention. B . People still use silver salt to make photographic films today. C . Good prints were possible because scientists developed the photographic paper. D . Dr Edward Lane invented a camera which can develop films itself.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. They provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help him prevent droughts floods.

Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the (three) of these services is the most important. In order to make money (quick) from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers. Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down thousands of trees (build) warships. It built up a strong empire (帝国). But without the trees, (it) soil became poorer and poorer. When the empire fell to pieces, the country (find) itself facing with floods and hunger.

Even though a government realizes the (important) of trees, it is difficult to make the people realize this. They cut down trees but are too lazy to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has good system of control, or the people are educated, the forests may slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even (serious). If there are tree roots which break the soil up and allow the rain to sink in, the soil can be bound (受约束的).

This prevents the soil being washed away. But if there are no trees, the soil will become hard and poor. This causes floods. And the rain carries away the rich topsoil (表层土) in which crops grow. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but useless sand.
